Today a new fibre broadband player joined in the wars of the fibre broadband plans. As a launch promotion, WhizComms will be offering free 1Gbps home fibre broadband to 1,000 customers from 1 November 2016 with no strings attached for 3 months.

Customers can enjoy three months’ free WhizComms Broadband as long as they meet the following criteria:
Be a Singapore citizen/PR
Have a fibre-ready home
Is ready for their first fibre line at home OR has an existing home broadband contract that is due for renewal within 3 months’ time

The price plan is also pretty attractive. The 1Gbps price plans from as low as $32/month for a 24 months plan, or $36/month for a 12 months plan, both of which include an optical network router plus delivery and installation at the customer’s home.

Do take note that the package does not comes with a wireless router. They also do not support Fixed voice line service. If you require the fixed voice line, you will have to port it back to Singtel which incur a monthly cost.

Right now they target new user only.. i think not a very smart move..

If people willing to pay for new line setup and trial. They should do it..

Up stream provider is SingTel.

This is good because it has go below $39 and it is time for M1 to knockdown their price to $29/mth for 1Gbps la.

Then what's the after effect ?

Those on 300Mbps will be auto upgrade to 1Gbps ?

1Gbps -> 2Gbps ?

So on and so forth ?

Scary effect leh.

M1 can stop selling 300Mbps and offer 1Gbps at $29/mth. Existing 300Mbps users can comtinue their existing plan till 21 mths then upgrade from 300Mbps to 1Gbps plan. 1Gbps user can continue till recontract. No impact on 2Gbps at all.

So this whizcomm definitely using ST as their OpCo? Wouldn't this affect ST's own? Unless they want both shares of the pie.

Let's see how will M1 respond to this new player. Hope they can come out with something before Sitex starts later this month. If 1Gbps wld drop to $29, this will make the deal more sweet. Factoring they will throw in the 1G BBOM and the free home phone line.

I think they just connected to ST for Internet access.

jury_pack 01-11-2016 05:58 PM

I would believe the new player would be doing heavy traffic shaping or high content compression. Getting 1gbps from SingTel the costs is already very scary. Else soon they will be like superinternet, quiet till no news.

ZrE0_Cha0s 01-11-2016 06:05 PM

so does that means that this company fiber line is tap under singtel line/backend system?

crewcutboy 01-11-2016 08:21 PM

The Managing Director of WhizComms is also the Managing Director of Phoenix Comms, the company that sells prepaid IDD cards. He's an ex Singtel guy. The office address for WhizComms is also the address for Phoenix Comms.

WhizComms = Phoenix Comms

snakey256 01-11-2016 08:32 PM

Should be la if M1 still want to be cheapest in town. A few days ago i already mentioned waiting for M1 to knockdown the price to $29 for 1Gbps plan.

If they step up their marketing then everybody will lose some customers to them, not just M1. In fact, SH probably got the most to lose from this since ST indirectly gains from selling wholesale to Whiz.

Actually after i jumped over to M1 i heard many ST users say ST improved a lot so i guess many people (perhap > 5k) will start to jump to this new isp. When VQ was new in Sg, many people jumped over. I guess SH and M1 will loss more customers so it will be wiser to knock down their price earlier to prevent people from jumping over.

UptheToon 02-11-2016 09:47 AM

Anyone willing to try this out? Will it be good? Quite tempting.

natzboyz 02-11-2016 09:54 AM

how to survive? Aren't they just renting the "fibre line" from SH/M1/Singtel?

Price war sure not sustainable

They're just buying from Singtel at wholesale rates.

singtel in disguise

UptheToon 02-11-2016 11:20 AM

If they are cheap and stable connection. Why not? Who cares singtel or not.

Cheap yes but stable nobody knows. Then again, if it's the same stability as ST, ST customers must be fuming why on earth are they paying so much for the same shyt :s22:

New provider of course must promote service at a cheaper price. If comparable, who would give a try?

chengsun 02-11-2016 12:13 PM

If their customers have problem, do their backend have direct access to resolve the problem? Or they can only tell customers "We have escalated to Singtel for solution"?

ZrE0_Cha0s 02-11-2016 12:28 PM

lol like this end up its singtel **** XD

well i don't think so they will say that. if you tell me the engineers rectifying the issue are from singtel, this one i believe..

well its still different i suppose. whizcomm comes out with their own business strategy and merely use the existing infrastructure to deliver their services.

deathblade82 02-11-2016 02:13 PM

So technically speaking, WhizComms == SingTel - VLAN tagging ???

WhizComms, a virtual operator, does not own fibre optic network infrastructure but instead buys network access wholesale from telco Singtel.

NTT has stopped accepting new applications for their cable broadband service, citing "service review". Looks like some changes are afoot.
