You have to try Infuse 3.. Great codec and subtitles support and beautiful UI (with gestures).

Upgrade to Pro for DTS audio.

Yea Infuse 3 is good for video streaming via NAS. I'm also using RushPlayer on both my iPhone and iPad. No problems so far with .mkv, .avi, .mp4 and .rmvb

Are you able to access and play videos on say a network drive over wifi?
Yes, OPlayer HD & OPlayer Lite able to stream video from NAS or HDD attached to ASUS router. I've both the players.

These players also allows you to stream video from NAS & HDD (I've them on my iPad Air) :

AVPlayerHD
AcePlayer
CineXPlayer
AnyPlayerHD
MoliPlayer HD
MediaPlayer
PlayerXtreme

I am looking an alternative to MX Player Pro in Android, it has never failed to play any format of movies. Partly the reason I stopped buying iPad is due to limited video player. Is any player can do AC3 at all?

Thinking of getting air 2, but need to see if it has better video player

Anyone wanna use my iPad back up? It has vlc player on it haha

After getting iPad Air 2, I just restored the backup and vlc was back on the new ipad

Vlc seems to be the only player that I can stream my synology blu Ray remux and mkvs with. All other players damn fail

Honestly if your main use case for a tablet is playing videos of different codecs, you're much better off with an Android tablet. It's not just the software, the form factor (16:9 display, which is most movies) is better.

If you also want to do writing / sketching. Then look for a Note tab or a Surface Pro.

Otherwise in pretty much all other aspects (tablet app ecosystem, reading / web browsing form factor / iOS interoperability) an iPad is decidedly a better tablet.

PlayerXtreme can play almost all the format. You can unlock the pro version by just giving them a review.
