iMessage on ipad1

Hi, can iMessage use on iPad 1? If can, how come when I try to send using 3G it can't do so? The blue lighted up send key didn't even light up.

I managed to send once on my iPad a few days back using my office wifi. I think iMessage used the contacts we saved on our iPads to send msg instead of hp nos. Meaning it will only send msgs if u have imput names with contacts into the iPad. However I'm unable to do so now. Correct me if I was wrong.

iMessage will only be able to deliver message to recipients whom have tied either their Phone Numbers or Emails to their AppleID.

Hope this clear things up (:

Same apple id on all devices? Firstly, goto ur settings - messages. And configure ur receive options.
Just to add, you are able to send an imessage to yourself across all devices using same apple id.
