I was told that the motherboard of my ipad air died, apparently it cant be switched on and it is not the battery problem. It is no longer under warranty, does that mean that's the end of my ipad? Apparently apple doesn't repair ipad and repairing at those shops outside is not worth it as it is about $200 plus for replacing the motherboard.

That sounds ridiculous. Which service center did you go to? The iPad Air is too new for Apple to not offer a repair for it.

I went to the authorised apple service centers such as Alab at change city point/ plaza sing and QCD at Wheelock. I was told that apparently the only option I have is to pay $550 to get a new ipad air as they do not do repair after warranty is over?!?!

Apple usually does not repair iPhone and iPad. They wil do a one-to-one exchange if there is any fault. For your case since the warranty is over, you got to pay for the "repair" price which is the replacement.
