Using iPad in SAF camps or Bases

Anyone using iPad in such premises? (For the fact that iPod Touch is approved)

What's the reaction?

I did see a man in green using it on the bus so I assume the camp he was from (Most likely Seletar area) allows it.

For my camp, the rules are:

1. No Image Capturing Devices

2. No Removable Storage (e.g USB) or Memory Card reading devices

I believe the iPad does not even fall within these two rules. It is technically an iPod touch with an awesomely large screen and for Wifi+3G models, the 3G internet capability (which by now, is a standard feature for almost all the mobile phones in Singapore). If they want to push the second rule, then only the Camera Connector Kit should be banned.

However there's news spreading around in my camp that a high-ranking officer brought his iPad in and was told by a camp security officer that it's not allowed as it "practically replaces a laptop". Obviously if they want to force this sort of strange rule, the argument can be extended that any sort of PDA or Smartphone that has "productivity apps" or the ability to use GPRS/3G internet should be banned too.

As mentioned above.

It doesn't have a camera.
It does not have a USB port.

A non-camera smartphone (htc snap) can do tasks with the right applications. And the iPod touch, which is allowed, is similar to the iPad, less the screen and the 3G connectivity. So on what premise would it not be allowed? A smartphone also 'replaces a laptop'.

Asking the MP would be better.

It all boils down to the units' individual house rules. apart from all the standard countraband items stated in the MSD requirements which must be complied with, the rest are up to the unit's CO for approval.

my reply to the guard on duty would be "this is an upsized ipod touch". lol. Besides, it's running on the same os as ipod touch, if the touch is not considered as a laptop the pad can't be too just because it has a bigger screen size.

Seriously I thought that since iPad has no camera and has the same capabilities like an iPod Touch. It should be allowed.

Else ban iPod Touch yo be consistence.
