But why ah ?

It is simply more efficient to use HEIF (High Efficiency Image File Format)
It always takes a company with courage to drop old tech for newer and better ones. XD (RIP headphone jack users)

Better compression.
Modern format.
Better image quality.

Good comparison site

HEIF has a higher depth than JPEG. As HEIF uses a 16-bit deep color, while the JPEG is only 8-bit which is smaller by at least two-fold. To be clear, devices that support HEIF format can capture more colors provided by the 10-bit color output present in cameras. What's more, the editing function of HEIF format is more powerful than that of JPEG.

HEIF is more flexible than JPEG. It is not just a file format but a file container. JPEG can only support a single image, while HEIF can support either a single image or a series of image. This feature makes HEIF perfect to take living photos. This advantage also makes it potential to replace GIF in the future.

I'm not disputing what you said, but there are also examples that say otherwise..so I put this up for discussions:

These are quite dated though, so has the HEIF format improved since these were made?

Eh well HEVC/HEIF is the way to go for the normal users and techies and mobile users simply on the efficiency and flexibility of it.

New iphone defaults to it now.

Photographer will always use RAW for the image data from their cameras or even from mobile.

To the question HEIC vs JPG.

With all modern iPhones shooting photos in HEIC format, which is smaller than even Google's compressed JPG files, while still maintaining quality equal or even better than JPG.

If you use Google Photo backup...

iPhones technically get free unlimited ORIGINAL quality backups simply because it would cost Google both storage space (because if Google tried to compress iPhones HEIC photos they would actually become larger) and computing power (because Google doesn’t need to compress and process all of the billions of photos iPhones backup.)

If a photo is larger than 16MP, it will be resized to 16MP. But iPhone have not hit 16MP yet so we are safe from it being resized

So Apple is literally saving Google millions of dollars by shooting their photos in HEIC and it benefits iPhone users as well because we get free original quality backups cause it is not being compressed at all. If you are using Google Photo Backup..

Now with the in-build photo app you have the ability to edit your photos. 11 pro, 11, XS, XR makes little diff because end of the day, it is the person standing behind the camera that is the key to great photos. Give a guy who know how to compose a iphone X and he will still take more out-standing photos than one with the latest 11 pro.

Of cos... the ultra-wide on the 11 pro... is another story. :s13:
