need some advice -

Which will be the better JR pass to buy if staying near osaka station & going to kyoto/hiroshima/himeji/kobe for 6 nites afterwhich taking one way bullet train from osaka to tokyo on the 7th day.

tia
You can work out the total costs incurred vs the cost of the JR pass
http://www.hyperdia.com/en/

roughly
KIX-Osaka 1190x1

osaka-kyoto 560x2

osaka-hiroshima 10230x2

osaka-himeji 1490x2

osaka-sannomiya(kobe) 410x2

osaka-tokyo 14140x1

Total 40,630

One 7 days JR pass is 29110

There's saving if you go for the JR Pass. saving could be more than above if you take more shorter JR trains within the period as you are visiting them.

Hi cpuer ,

Thanks for your swift response.

hmmmm.. Can I use the Kansai Hiroshima pass then buy one way shinkansen ticket from Osaka to Tokyo? Will it be cheaper & better than JR pass?

First time travel to Osaka, so rather confusing...

yes, you can surely go for that Kansai-Hiroshima Area Pass and its cheaper than JR pass even if you spent the shinkansen tickets from Osaka to Tokyo

Yup, thats what I did earlier this year. Kansai-Hiroshima Area Pass + 1 way Shinkansen to Tokyo.

This way, you get to take the Nozomi train, which is faster and more frequent. Just note that you can't take Shinkansen between Osaka and Kyoto using the area pass... only special rapids.

You can also save a bit by taking the unreserved Nozomi from Osaka to Tokyo as there are some Nozomi that starts from Osaka.. so no worries about having no seats

kansai-hiroshima pass is 13000yen, and Osaka to Tokyo is ard 14000yen. so it is about 2000yen different compared to getting a 7-day JR pass

however, kansai-hiroshima pass is only 5 days, so it depends on where u are going on those 2 days that is not covered. so end up total cost is probably going to be ard the same either way.

note that kansai-hiroshima pass doesn't allow reservations on shinkansen and ltd express train. 7-day JR pass allows reservations

one advantage is shin-osaka -> tokyo you don't have to be restricted to kodama / hikari shinkansen which i personally prefer as there are more nozomi trains and the travel duration is shorter. some ppl don't mind the difference in duration though.

the difference in price: 7 day JR pass minus kansai-hiroshima pass minus one way nozomi shin-osaka -> tokyo is about 2.5k diff. so you weigh the odds whether the extra 2 days on the 7 day JR pass is worthwhile.

hi all..

Thank you so much for all your kind advise.

What attracts me is able to take the Nozomi train, which is faster and more frequent from Osaka to Tokyo.

What worries me is kansai-hiroshima pass doesn't allow reservations on shinkansen and ltd express train but 7-day JR pass allows reservations- for
this route, will the shinkansen be pack in the morning & need to stand all the way to Hiroshima from osaka station? Anybody knows?

As mentioned by thesal, take the shinkansens that start from shin-osaka. Can check on hyperdia (train timetable). Then reach abit earlier to queue.

For Kansai Hiroshima pass, u can take Shinkansen. No need reservations. Not many ppl on non reserved seats from Shin Osaka to Hiroshima leg.

Trust this "oniisan" who has been to Japan 29 times

even the ones from Tokyo? My dates are the long weekend in November, though I understand hiroshima not really a koyo spot.

Thank you.

I missed the Genki Sushi in Shibuya. this time round going Kyoto/Osaka. Checked and seems like Osaka got no genki sushi. Kyoto seems to have one outlet 1hr journey away.

Search the address on Google map. looks a bit weird eh. anyone who understand jap or been there before can help to verify?

@dmitri_can if you were in Odaiba and there was a huge meteor coming to end all life on earth and you had one last (lunch) meal, where would you have it?
