Gunkanjima now off limits

Recently they have detected high levels of asbestos in some of the viewing areas on Gunkanjima and they have banned all visits to the island until further analysis.

Erm for the rest of us who have already been to the island, maybe it is time to check in to a cancer clinic?

No, it's not related to typhoon. As OP mentioned it's about high asbestos levels. The information was only announced yesterday so perhaps they haven't had time to update their website yet. Tours are still running around the island but cannot land on the island.

Pity, that island known as 'Battleship Island is really great for Instagram :-)

Ah, I see your meaning now, sorry. Yes, you may be right. I haven't seen much detail except it's closed. Anyway, I'll update here if I hear it's open again.

I was there in May, and the weather was nice enough for us to disembark and go on the tour. Considering that visitors are only there for an hour, it should be fine since we are not up close or inside the structures smelling asbestos. The tour guides will be at risk tho, since they do the tours every day.

Was there in April and landed. Don't think u lose very much by not landing, since you don't get anywhere near the buildings.
