Ah... If Dec is early for snow then Nov would probably be zero chance, barring freak occurrences of nature? :(
It depends how far you're willing to travel. In early October for example the daisetsuzan mountains in hokkaido already few inches of snow on the ground.

It also depends if you want to have snow falling from the sky or if snow on the ground and walk around on it is "good enough" or not.

Thanks for the info! Snow falling would be best, since wife has never seen snow before. Perhaps we will try for Hokkaido.

Can plan a "guaranteed snow fall trip" to sapporo next time. It is normal for travellers to visit japan more than once. I have been there 4 times.

I saw snow in Yuzawa on 24 December 2018 - 75 mins ride on bullet train from Tokyo. It was snowing heavily the whole day and my kids enjoy snow sledding, building snowman and playing with snow. We were lucky. :)

we went Nikko on the 22Dec and was surprised to see snow on the ground... got enough snow for our driver to make a decent size (abt 60-70cm) snowman by the time we return to the car...
