LG rumored to unveil 5G-enabled V50 alongside G8 next month

akrales_180925_2957_0135.0.jpg

Next month’s Mobile World Congress is shaping up to be an interesting one for LG, with the South Korean company now rumored to be unveiling two handsets at the show: the LG G8 ThinQ and a second, higher-end, 5G-enabled device, possibly the LG V50 ThinQ 5G.

This latter rumor comes from Korea’s ETNews, which says the LG V50 will feature a 6-inch display, 7nm Snapdragon 855 chipset with vapor-chamber cooling, and 4,000mAh battery. More importantly, says ETNews, it’ll have a 5G modem.

If the V50 does land at MWC, it’ll be arriving sooner than expected. The V40 and its five cameras only launched last fall, and we weren’t expecting an update to LG’s highest-end line until the same time this year. But, speeding up the launch cadence would make sense if LG wants to keep up with Samsung, which has promised a 5G device in the first half of 2019. And LG said it will push “5G products and smartphones” this year in its latest earnings report.

A quick turnaround, though, could end up disappointing some. If LG is only changing the processor and modem for the V50, the end result could be an iterative device like the V35.

ETNews says the V50 will be available in select North American and European markets from March. This matches what we’ve heard from carrier Sprint, which said last August it was working with LG to release a 5G handset some time in the first half of this year. We’ll know more at LG’s MWC event, February 24th.

We’re all expecting South Korean tech giant LG to unveil the LG G8 at MWC 2019, but a new report suggests that the company will also use the moment to lift the lid on its 5G-supporting LG V50 ThinQ at the same time.

The LG G8 looks like it has an awful lot going for it, but use of 5G networks is not one of them. The idea of launching the V50 ThinQ at the same time is apparently so it can go toe to toe with the 5G version of the Samsung Galaxy S10

LG’s first 5G phone just leaked — here’s the V50 ThinQ

OK, I’m about convinced that Vlad is right: phone manufacturers aren’t even trying anymore. Hot on the heels of learning practically everything Samsung could possibly announce at its Galaxy S10 press conference later this month, including up to five phones and an entire wearables lineup, we're now leaning that LG’s new superphone — the LG V50 ThinQ — has just broken cover. It turns an entire trail of bread crumbs into a remarkably decent picture of a phone worth watching for.

We knew that LG was bringing a 5G smartphone to Sprint in the first half of 2019, and separately, we’d heard that the company might debut its rumored, 5G-equipped V50 superphone alongside the likely-to-be-more-reasonably-priced LG G8 at Mobile World Congress later this month.

But now, prominent phone leaker Evan Blass (@evleaks) has given us what’s almost certainly our full first press pictures of the V50, and it seems those two reports are describing the same thing. The LG V50 ThinQ appears to be headed to Sprint’s 5G nacent network, and we should see an announcement on February 24.

IMO V50 is just a marketing gimmick for LG to show that it's also making 5G devices

Other than that feels like a V40 with a bit larger battery capacity. Even the camera hardware looks like zero improvements over the V40. Quad DAC by now already more or less as good as it gets and is also a feature that G series have.

Wish the V series can go back to the sturdy durable build with the metal and second screen, now it just looks like a larger G series and has really lost its unique identity
