Yes agree - Cherry Garden damn good. But i also like their crystal dumplings.
Do they still have the a la carte buffet? i.e. Order unlimited from menu and they serve it to you, not take from buffet table, most wastage. Long time neh been liao

Second this. Cherry garden has the best char siew pau imo, the kurobuta is just so rich and flavorful.

Have not tried them. Are they better than cherry garden? For those who been to both, any comment?

Hmmm I cant offer a good comparative analysis since I have not been to Cherry Garden, unfortunately

But I doubt it would be too different

I honestly like Hong Kong Zhai located at Block 107 Ang Mo Kio Avenue 4. It's cheap and good, weekends is super crowded though.....
This place is ...

The porridge is so watery and tasteless.
Har gao is - the skin really CMI! Very pastey.
Char siew bao is so-so.
Egg tart - pastry is quite good, but the custard is too sweet for my liking.
Fried carrot cake is not nice.

Better items are the big bao, lotus leaf wrapped glutinous rice, siew mai and chicken feet.

Overall - not say that fantastic. Above 9 items almost $25.

Apparently the Red Star of the 60s isnt the same as the Red Star of today, or so I've heard from many elders

Because it isn't all that nice. In fact, it's quite mediocre. The only thing it has going is its old-school nostalgia.
