MO: Professional E61 Espresso Machine - Profitec Pro700

Profitec GmbH was founded in 1985 and has specialized in the marketing of Italian espresso machines and technical products. They have developed and manufactured hand-made, high-end semi-automatic espresso machines since the 1990's. Profitec is certainly no newcomer to the espresso scene. They are the sister company of ECM Espresso Coffee machines, a company with over 40 years of product design, R&D and production line assembly experience in high end commercial espresso machines.

Profitec Pro 700

A truly exceptional and feature laden home use espresso machine, the Pro 700 is the realization of Profitec’s dream of creating a machine that provides baristas with a singular espresso experience. A marriage of German engineering and Italian tradition, the machine impresses not only with its quality components and construction, but also with nuanced features that enhances ease of use, longevity and most importantly, the brewing of excellent espresso. The Profitec Pro700 is truly the connoisseur's espresso machine, and is growing in popularity immensely.

Externally, the machine is housed in a gorgeous mirror-finish stainless steel which extends all the way to its wrapped polished edges. The attention to detail in its components and construction is remarkable all the way throughout the machine. The housing rests on a one-piece internal steel frame that extends from the back of the machine through to the drip tray. As opposed to welding the tray to the front of the machine, protects it from bending or bowing during shipping or as the result of continuous use.

Profitec Pro700 Overview

As a dual boiler machine, there is both a 0.75 liter boiler dedicated exclusively to brewing and a 2 liter boiler dedicated to steaming. Both boilers are made of stainless steel and wrapped with high quality thermal insulation. The boilers have been bolted to the frame of the machine for structural stability but are easily removable, an element of Profitec's highly modular internal design that allows for easy access during servicing.

Brew pressure is provided by a commercial grade RPM motor and rotary pump which cuts down on the noise produced by the brewing process and allows you to connect the machine directly to a water line or use the 3 liter water reservoir. The last facet of the brewing process, the E61 brew group is made of solid chrome plated brass and is constantly heated by a thermosyphon system to ensure maximum temperature stability.

Being a double boiler machine, the Pro 700 is able to effortlessly brew and steam at the same time. The steam wand is internally insulated with a Teflon coating to prevent burns and comes standard with a four hole interchangeable tip to complement its powerful steaming ability. The hot water wand is also similarly insulated to prevent accidental burns.

Another feature that demonstrates Profitec's attention to detail are the spring loaded steam and hot water valves. These unconventional valves use a spring to hold the valves shut, as opposed to having to be tightened manually. This feature prevents any damage caused by accidental overtightening and reduces wear and tear, extending the valves lifespan beyond conventional, 'crank down to seal' valves. The spring loaded valves also only take half a turn to go from fully closed to fully open, making steaming milk or dispensing hot water a breeze.

A unique and desirable feature of the Pro 700 is its front mounted dual boiler PID display that monitors both the brew and steam boiler temperatures and allows you to adjust both, a beneficial feature that allows you to achieve more precise brewing conditions to extract certain notes and flavors from different coffees. An additional function boasted by the Pro 700's Gicar Chrono PID is its built-in shot timer that starts counting up as soon as you lift the lever to begin brewing. In addition to the PID, the front of the machine also sports dual pressure gauges that monitor both brewing and steam boiler pressure.

Profitec Pro 700 reviews

Home Barista.com User Review

"The Pro 700 is a great machine. I did some tinkering and dialing in per a few HB's threads on this forum - and now it's close to perfect. It really is a dream of a machine." - User review
Coffeesnobs.com Australia Forums - Profitec Pro 700

"On the Scace, it had excellent inter and intra shot temperature stability. Some dual boiler machines feed water through a heat exchanger in the steam boiler before entry to the brew boiler. The reason for this is to avoid the brew water temperature dropping due to the influx of cooler water into the brew boiler. If this was an issue in the Pro 700 we would have seen a drop in brew water temperature and we didn't. So the Pro 700 avoids some complexity with no apparent drop in performance." - Jetblack Espresso Australia
"In the end though I upgraded because of the difference in the cup. I've posted a number of times about how happy I was with the ECM. The Profitec (amazingly to me) has taken the quality of espresso shots up to a whole different level. I've lowered temperature to 92*C and it enhances the enzymatic flavours, reduces the roasty dry distillates and provides a cleaner, more elegant acidity profile. I think that the clarity of the flavours on the dual boiler is fantastic."
Clive Coffee - Profitec Pro 700

The group head on the Profitec Pro 700 may look like your stock-standard E61 brew group but it has a secret. The internal ‘mushroom sleeve’ is solid stainless steel rather than chrome-plated brass. This tiny modification is an example of the attention to detail that Profitec should be congratulated on. In the long term this stainless steel part will require less maintenance than one made from the more traditional materials.

*Note: To clarify : The 4 hole steam tip now comes as standard on the Profitec Pro 700.

CoffeeGeek.com Forums - Espresso Machines, Rocket R58 Vs La Marzocco GS3

"The Profitec and the R58 are very similar USD$2,700 machines. The Rocket has its PID controller on a separate remote unit, which some consider cheesy. Under the covers, the R58 looks pretty standard, while the Profitec kind of resembles a Cremina, as though the engineers said "let's design this with the fewest possible ultra-strong parts, and optimize the layout for maintenance."

Both machines will make great espresso; the Profitec looks like it will do that forever."
