Hubtroopers are those installers that come and do the installations of your ONT and Routers.

Why you asking ?

Am considering switching to Starhub and if I do, will either use my existing Asus 88U alone or if wifi coverage not great, then probably that and Google wifi. My networking knowledge sucks so will probably need to get them to assist.

Are they generally quite knowledgeable? I recall Viewqwest once sent one guy who knew barely more than I do. :s8:

They are just higher payable services, $100+++.
But i doubt on their wide experience may be non existent.
The issue is do you have the time and patience.
It may not just one hour or day job.
As they may make several rounds in the so called their way of troubleshooting any issues.
In the past there were not so good comments on their services.

Nope.
They are neither installers nor technicians that do installation.
They are so-called "expert" in troubleshooting in areas which may considered as weak spots by non savvy customers.

This is just a service to have for every Service Providers.
Not sure if they are being out-source or not.
Part of this Services are for Aftersales services needed.

For SH,
1.you just remember to change to OpenDNS/GoogleDNS
2. Asus routers, DHCP Query must change to Normal. Default is Aggressive.

This was not done 3+ yrs ago when they came to do the installations.
They just merely setup your ONT + Routers.
Check connectivity to internet + speed (on their laptops).
The router settings are all left at default.
That time was free installations on weekends.

Since now needs to pay, it is better you get them to setup the Google Wifi as well. Do note that Google Wifi signals are quite weak from the internet reviews.

Personally, I would prefer to use the Portal Router due to the DFS Fastlane technology that they employ. And if you encounter any problem, they send their Product Manager down to your site. That is wow !!!
However the down side is the 2.4Ghz performance is not great.

That is from my personal experience
1st appt - Opennet to activate the 2nd port
2nd appt - Hub troopers to perform installation of ONT + Router.

That may be in the past.
No longer use HUB troopers for Installation, as I never encountered at all.

THey need to update thir support information then. It still states that for broadband a hub trooper will come and do the installation... http://www.starhub.com/content/dam/starhub/2015/support/pdf/broadband/fibre-installation.pdf

@derrickgoh if you:
(1) have managed to do your own troubleshooting for your 88U and existing devices

(2) are comfy poking around your router's admin settings

(3) don't have existing devices which give you frustration wrt wifi connection

(4) are not shifting the location of existing router due to location of connection (e.g. switching from fibre to fibre and not from ADSL to fibre),

then I think you should be able to handle the "networking" setup yourself. Call the Troopers later if you are really stuck post-installation and self-troubleshotting.

It's mainly the question of how much time and patience you have/are willing to do it yourself. To some, the hassle of having to TROUBLESHOOT is irritating/time consuming and they'd rather pay for someone else to do it.

Also, as per SH's info, ASUS routers are not within the realm of Hub Troopers' "specialisation", although they can do it if you provide the user manual - ASUS guidance on fine-tuning is largely found on their support site and their user manual may not have all details. Much better than D-Link's manual (which largely regurgitate what is on-screen) though... I assume that they should be competent handling D-Link and Linksys networking equipment...

That picture is a illustration for a normal broadband installation which is not Hub Trooper as not stated.

The updated version is under VAS; Value Added Services = payable service.

Refer to this link for the FAQs on this Hub Trooper services which is charges even if the customer decided to cancel after making the appointment.

http://www.starhub.com/personal/support/broadband/value-added-services/hub-troopers.html

Do note that Starhub websites on certain webpages are not updated properly.
Hence there are such confusion on any 1 subject which may have several answers which are mostly incompatible or misleading.
