Laptop for AutoCAD & SketchUp

Evening all,

Currently looking to get a laptop to run autocad and sketchup somewhat smoothly. Doesn't have to a super high specced laptop if not I would be building a dekstop.

Not sure what I'm actually looking for looks and spec wise but touchscreen is not necessary. Maybe something that would be somewhat light and portable.

Anyone has any reccomendations?

Thinkpad e495. Souped up my laptop with 32gb ram, 512gb nvme, 1tb ssd total for 900. The upgraded are self installed with parts bought from amazon/newegg.

Base spec i only customized with 3500u and fhd display.

For school work?
Desktop would be recommended than laptop.
Really depend on your budget but I suggest use the
workstation at the school computer lab.

Their configuration would be able to run Autocad smoothly
especially the graphic card use would be either quadro/firepro.
If you were to get a laptop that have quadro/firepro,
it would easily cost near $3k.

Gaming laptop is possible but to handle Autocad Geforce graphics isn't recommend. Since geforce is more towards gaming than CAD.
My advice to you is simple:

- CAD school workstation to create/edit CAD drawing
- Laptop with decent graphic power for school work and to use
Autocad DWG Viewer.
Any amendment you just take note than go to school workstation
to change.

If you are wondering if can DIY a PC for CAD, the spec is not only costly but
rather high end type.

Getting it for work actually, so I need something portable.

No crazy renderings and things like that, just simple 2D drawings on AutoCAD.

I was looking at the Ideapad L340, customized came out to about 1.2k. Don't think I need the GTX1650.

Will look into the e495

And under the lenovo customization, the put the SSD as the 2nd drive, does that mean they'll install the OS in the HDD isntead?

Edit: was playing around with the L340 customizer and tried googling but cant find the difference between the i7-9750H and HF

You can request for the OS to be preloaded to the SSD through the CSO live chat. Be sure to chat with them for freebies like $1 3 year warranty or others. But, your system will start to be built from 24 Feb onwards. The factory is closed until then. Could take 2 months from 24 Feb to be delivered with all the backlog.

If you are looking at lightweight, ThinkPad X395 or T495 is good too.

Woah, that's quite long.

Do you have any recommendations for a laptop with similar specs that I can get within this month?

Due to the pandemic so the leadtime is longer.
Under $1k, choices are limited.
If you need a laptop asap than either:

- $1.5k laptop Intel u series with geforce graphic
- Consider second hand laptop like from PCdreams,
there are some models under $1k.

There are AMD Ryzen laptop under $1k, like HP and Lenovo.
The build and aftersales are not as good like Thinkpad.

Just got a 2nd hand aftershock laptop with 32gb ram and a 1050.

Just need to get either a 2.5" ssd or m2. Was quite a good deal

I have similar requirements. Where is a good place for me to get the laptop? Anywhere cheap and good?

I recently bought a lightly used Thinkpad P53 from eBay. The listing stated that it was spec’d with Nvidia T2000. When it finally reached me, I booted it up and found the discrete GPU to be something different.

It was a nvidia RTX5000. KNN, I felt cheated.
