Here are some of the questions u need to consider:
Which engineering?
What are ur use cases?
Do u need to play games on it?
Do u have a desktop at home to run the really computationally expensive stuff?
What's your budget?
Without knowing all these, how is anyone going to recommend anything for you?

I'm not from Engineering so I'm not sure what kind of programs they need to run.

I favour lightweight and unix commands, so I ended up getting a macbook air for $1128 after a student discount from their website. This is the cheapest one, I nvr upgrade anything.

For all the Windows program and computationally expensive operations, I have a desktop at home to run them.

Get from IT fairs at expo or Suntec or MBS. NUS fairs are expensive. They come bundled with softwares which most students get for free on torrent. You can easily save hundreds of dollars at IT fairs/expo, with large selections.

Just budget at around $1000 for an average laptop. I did that, got an i5, discrete graphics, 8gb ram, Acer, last time. But now i regret. I could have saved $500 by getting an i3, definitely sufficient for uni.
