AMD’s Revolutionary Mantle Graphics API Adopted by Industry Leading Game Developers Cloud Imperium, Eidos-Montréal and Oxide

New developers join AMD to advance PC game performance improvements and simplify PC game development with close-to-the-metal API for AMD Radeon™ GPUs and APUs.

Cloud Imperium Games is currently developing “Star Citizen,” the highly anticipated, crowd-funded PC space simulator from legendary game designer Chris Roberts.

“AMD’s Mantle will allow us to extract more performance from an AMD Radeon GPU than any other graphics API,” said Chris Roberts, CEO, Cloud Imperium Games. “Mantle is vitally important for a game like Star Citizen, which is being designed with the need for massive GPU horsepower. With Mantle, our team can spend more time achieving our perfect artistic vision, and less time worrying about whether or not today’s gaming hardware will be ready to deliver it.”

oh and roughly 20 more days before LTI ends. forever.

there will be another promo on the 11 Nov 2013. Most probably the F7C-M SH upgrades will be on sale again.
get ready if you missed out, and remember - LTI does not factor on upgrades, only the main hull. And upgrades must be applied in the future, because at launch they cannot be applied any longer.

remember less than 20 days till end of LTI.

Hi everyone, first post here on HWZ.

I have never played any of the wing commander games, but I did enjoy Freelancer back in the day. The exploration, jumping into unknown gates, dodging asteroids while dogfighting pirates, hauling precious (sometimes illegal) cargo across the galaxy for profit, upgrading weapons and equipment for more pwnage. All this coupled with some really accessible controls, interface and an engaging main storyline, it's just great.

So after Chris Roberts comes out after all this time and announces Star Citizen, I have been cautiously optimistic about it, but was undecided about backing it. The scope seemed so big and ambitious, and while Freelancer was great, it too was a victim of over-ambition, and had several features cut for the release. I was skeptical that a crowd funded game could attain these lofty heights, but unwilling to just dismiss it outright.

Therefore, this thread has been an excellent one-stop news station for me and other lurkers and fence-sitters (thanks alot Pyre), since the official homepage, storefront and forums of the game are rather daunting to sieve through for information and guides.

It was only recently, with all the sensation about the hangar module, trailers with in-game assets, AMD mantle partnership, and the insane amount of money it has already collected, that swayed me towards the "screw it just put down the money and worry in 2015" stance.

After hearing about the news that LTI will end soon for pledgers, I guess I've been successfully poisoned again by HWZ. Browsing the store now and thinking about which ship to start with, and I am good to go

However, I still have a few questions that admittedly will be difficult to answer definitively at this stage of development. Nevertheless, I will just fire away and feel free to drop your opinions and speculate!

1. Star Citizen is billed as an MMO-single player game, with Squadron42 as the SP campaign and the actual universe sandbox as the MMO. The potential success of the MMO part I feel is highly dependent on both the quantity and quality of the playerbase, and so far the quantity is on track, but the uncertainty would be how the playerbase will evolve. I fear that it might be next EVE online, famous (or infamous) for its hardcore elitist core base, new players hitting the proverbial "noobwall" hard, rampant griefing and generally behaviour that discourage those without the passion nor time to invest in it to give it a try. I understand that EVE online is a unique case; somehow it is still surviving despite the culture and identity it has established, but I do feel that excessive elitism and segregation of the casual/hardcore playerbase is detrimental to long term viability of Star Citizen.

Now I am not advocating for the dumbing down of game mechanics (more than enough dumbed down stuff in the market nowadays), but I am wondering if the developers has given any signal as to what they envision the game to evolve into?

2. On game mechanics. Little has been announced regarding how clans/fleets will operate in Star Citizens, so here I am speculating again. Will player-controlled fleets be able to hold certain systems in a stranglehold, and then do stuff like extortion (something like protection money), or outright blockading jump gates and such? There is supposed to be some NPC police force patrolling the starting system, and a bounty system, which will mitigate the griefing of new players, but are there any other plans, or systems in place, or under consideration? Can RSI send out a victory fleet of Reapers to decimate a clan for constantly griefing, trolling, or otherwise being a jackass to others in the game? Or is the stance of RSI to sit back and let players self-regulate such behaviour?

3. On PvP. I enjoyed Freelancer as a single player game, but I am willing to give this MMO a chance, because, why the hell not? The last game with PvP that I invested time and effort into playing competitively was Call of Duty 4, and frankly, these days I'd rather just sit back, chill and fly a spaceship (either solo or with a group of like-minded players) on a trade run, or exploring uncharted space, or bounty hunting, without the pressure of needing to keep up performance levels. Is EDGE foundation still open for recruitment, and will you be accepting of players like me?

Thanks for reading this good old-fashioned wall'o text, and to those who already pledged, glad to finally be (late) to the party!

Wingman's Hangar ep 45

and the Veteran Days Hornet Upgrade offer which IMHO is only a skin. whether the upgrade stacks with other upgrades, I do not know. (which may violate the FAQ on upgrades)
https://robertsspaceindustries.com/c...-Upgrade-Offer

remember folks, less than 15 days left till end of LTI!
