He's running KL1. I'm on LA1.

I did flash to KL1 using CWM manager earlier, but the banding didn't change.

I'll try with Odin then.

Here's my set... notice the gigantic rings in the calculator display area.

The other 2 sets I saw also had banding, but the bands are _much_ thinner and more in number - not gigantic rings like mine.

sigh.
wah ur banding abit jia lat.. mine's like ur friends set.. which its normal since day 1..

That is because you need a dark picture with color gradients to see it, _not_ a pure black background.

The calculator background is _not_ pure black, but is dark blue fading to black.

You don't need apps - it can appear anywhere.

A simple example is wallpapers. Download this high res collection from xda-developers: 1600x1280.rar

Compare and contrast the following pictures on your phone and monitor: 0132, 0139, 0168, 0178, 0186.

I saw similar artifacts in videos as well, especially those with a lot of fade-to-blacks. Try watching the SNSD - Tell me your wish mtv video if u have it.

I picked calculator coz it's easy to replicate and it's installed in every Note.

I do notice in games (eg. shadowgun) that the color palette is much more dull compared with my other IPS LCD phone especially in darker scenes, and blocky banding pops up every now and then.
In darker videos, the blocky banding is bad enough to be detract from the enjoyment.

Think about it:
In calculator, my phone renders a bunch of colors as one block - won't it do the same in other cases where the colors displayed are darker?
Does it make sense for only calculator app to be affected?

Anyway, here's my friend set for reference. Not taken using the same camera, but it's the best I can give for now.

can try to download a app from market call voodoo screen tuning R&D,it help abit.also a app call Screen Adjuster to adjust the contrast, i did it with mine & the urgly ring is gone..

Thanks for the tip! The combination of both really worked to eliminate almost all the visible banding, even in pictures!

I used "Native" in Voodoo screen tuning, and "-5" for contrast in screen adjuster.

Now my LA1 calculator looks like my screenshot earlier:
