Does GPA matters after you graduate?

My personal experience so far tells me that network is more important than your school grades/resumes.

Some companies hire only first class (i.e. top tier finance companies)
that's what i used to think. with the right network and interviewing skills, you don't have to be first class.

I believe that GPA is important for proving how academically proficient you are, which could give good first impressions on paper. However, the question is how well you translate this proficiency to your work which produce actual results aside from paper qualifications.
