Reducing of VM hardisk space

i have created a Virtual Machine with hardisk size 20GB but i want to reduce to a smaller size,but will it affect my files inside?
how do i reduce the size?

Don't think can increase or reduce once it is SET.

Can increase cannot decrease.
If virtual disk is not preallocated, can use "Compact" to reclaims unused space. Or refer to this:
