ST Engineering Q3 profit up 68% on absence of one-time charge

THE absence of a one-time charge for its speciality vehicle business in China gave a fillip to results for Singapore Technologies (ST) Engineering for its third quarter.
Net profit leapt 67.5 per cent to S$128.4 million from the previous year, the group said in a Singapore Exchange filing on Wednesday morning.
For the three months ended Sept 30, revenue was little changed at S$1.62 billion, from S$1.61 billion the previous year. Higher revenue in the aerospace and electronics segments had been offset by lower contribution from the marine and land systems segments, said ST Engineering.
The bottom line had been boosted by lower distribution and selling expenses as well as other operating expenses, due to the absence of a one-time charge. ST Engineering had made an impairment of S$61.1 million for the same quarter last year for its speciality vehicle business in China.
Earnings per share rose to 4.12 Singapore cents from 2.47 Singapore cents in the previous year.
ST Engineering president and CEO Vincent Chong said that the firm's order book continues to be strong, and it maintains its outlook of comparable revenue and profit before tax for the year.

ST Aerospace wins 15-year contract from Gulf Air for B787 component support
Mon, Nov 20, 2017 - 5:51 PM Nisha Ramchandani nishar@sph.com.sg

SINGAPORE Technologies (ST) Engineering's aerospace arm, ST Aerospace, has landed a 15-year contract for Boeing 787 aircraft component support from Bahrain's flag carrier Gulf Air.
Under the agreement, ST Aerospace will provide component maintenance-by-the-hour (MBH) support for the airline's new fleet of 787-9s, including component exchange, repair, overhaul and modification. The Dreamliners will start to arrive from Q2 2018, with a total of 10 787s in the coming years.
ST Aerospace's MBH programme comes at a fixed rate per hour, enabling airlines to keep operating costs low while minimising fixed asset inventory in terms of spares or maintenance equipment.
ST Aerospace provides component support for a fleet of close to 600 aircraft on an MBH basis to over 20 airlines in the Asia-Pacific, Europe and the Middle East.
Headquartered in Muharraq, Gulf Air operates scheduled services to 42 destinations in 25 countries.

ST Kinetics, National Instruments to test autonomous systems in Singapore
THU, DEC 07, 2017 - 10:14 AM RACHEL MUI rachmui@sph.com.sg

ST Kinetics and National Instruments Singapore (NI) on Thursday said they will work as technology partners to test systems used by autonomous vehicles (AVs) and robotic solutions in Singapore.
Among the first AVs to be tested would be autonomous buses for the Land Transport Authority that are under development, and Sentosa's mobility-on-demand shuttles, the companies said.
The testing framework will encompass both functional and safety systems that determine the behaviour of AVs, including braking distance, obstacle avoidance, and the AVs' performance under various road and weather conditions.
"ST Kinetics will integrate NI's hardware and software, such as sensors and Lidar technology, to establish a testing system that would form the basis of testing requirements and standards for the deployment of AVs in Singapore," the companies said.
This system may also be extended to other autonomous platforms such as forklifts and autonomous mobile robots.
Said NI's Asean and ANZ managing director, Matej Krajnc: "As Singapore works towards realising its Smart Nation vision, the country is also challenged with land and manpower scarcity. Self-driving technology or AVs would therefore be highly critical and valuable in transforming the transport system and bringing about greater connectivity as well as accessibility."

hopefully ST-E US income is a small portion otherwise trump's protectionism would probably cause more damage. but then i can't understand why venture can nearly triple this year facing similar prospect of US closing the borders?

market is irrational dude.. if some big boys wanna short the stock then u just have to tank it out even though the fundamentals are still the same

u can take comfort in that ST E has bought back quite a lot of their own shares for the past few months
