Hi, thanks for the info over 100+ pages.

i will be going to Taiwan around end Oct or early Nov, and during the trip i would like to visit the famous Taroko Gorge, which is near Hualian. I've searched the net on how to go there myself, but couldn't find any detail information. However, I've found some one-day tours provided by some tour agents in Taipei, but found the price to be quite expensive (maybe it's because of the domestic flight). Does anyone have any info on how to go there on our own? any detailed travel info? thanks!

Hi, i/m now living in Rainbow Hotel rm601. Which rm are u living?
Just to add 1more thing, its exit 1. Alight from mrt, turn to right. Either u use underpass(if rainning) or cross the road..U will be able to see the nite mkt(its is sheltered). The other 1 is not sheltered. Its on the right side of the sheltered nite mkt. Both sheltered and non-sheltered have the HaoDaDa fried chicken.

My plan was to go there too..but i planned on the typhoon day...no choice had to refund the train ticket..
Ok.if u stay in taipei..go to the train station counter to buy train ticket(1-2days in advance). Its 802NT to and fro(express train). The time travelled is ard 3hrs 45mins, so try to book the morning train. Mine was 0830. My plan was to take taxi to go round Taroko Gorge..but i cant comment anything further as i didnt go there..so its up to u to tell us the updated news..eg..by tour bus or taxi..is it rush with the tour agents..cos from wat i saw at LonelyPlanet, those tour guides will rush ppl..most of the time spent is at souvenir shops..any1 can cfm??

not all tour agent will send tour guide, some of them just get e bus driver to contact u n tell e time for pickup, normally these will be a bit rush cos the bus will be normally doing pickup for quite a number of pple, worst still if he need to go some else where to pick up others, best way to tour there is book the taxi for whole day n ask them to bring u around, rate around 2~4000NT depend on how u neg e price wif them

Some of the shops are opened at ximenting like those eatery places, shops selling clothes are closed.
Strong winds and rains were throughout tw on the 31st aug..but on the 1st sept the typhoon is long gone, left behind are the aftereffects such as occassional showers

My humble itinerary
28th aug

-went to Yeliu ard 11am(sightseeing)(go out from Exit 1,Taipei Main STN, walk all the way to KuoKwang Bus Terminal, there are 2 terminals, the furthest 1. Approach the counter to buy the bus tix, ask the bus driver to inform u once Yeliu has reached. Walk down all the way along the minor road. quite far but no choice unless u have ur own transport.)
-went to Keelung ard 5pm(JiLong),(walk back to the road where u alight for Yeliu but this time the opposite direction, ask the bus driver whether the bus is heading back to JiLong. U would alight at a bus stop jus next to the sea port, walk to the train station to buy train tix back to taipei, remember to ask wat is the last train timing. There is a train schedule on the big board but its confusing at least to me)
-went to Keelung Nite Mkt,(should be opposite of the Train STN, correct me if i.m wrong )
-take train back to taipei

30th aug
-went to Taipei Ciy Hall STN(Taipei 101, Warner Village, Mitsukoshi Dept Store)
-Taipei 101.(Once u come out of the STN, there will be afew bus stops ard, look out for the Taipei 101 shuttle bus-stop. Remember to go up to the Observatory at the 89th flr, tix counter is at the 5th flr)
-Warner Village and Mitsukoshi Dept Store is nearby to Taipei 101.
-dinner at DingTaiFeng,YiXing Road(Take mrt to Guting STN, then taxi.)

-31th aug
-stayed at hotel throughout the morning till 1pm plus as typhoon is approaching Taiwan, cant go to Hualien, Taroko Gorge.)
-went to Taipei Train STN to refund the train tix to Hualien
-went to Chongqing Nan Lu(books, mag, comics, stationary)(nearby to Taipei Train STN)
-went to Shin Kong Tower 46th flr Observatory(something like Taipei 101 89th flr Observatory but old.)
-went to JianCheng Circle to have late lunch(by taxi)
-went to GuangHua Street(computer stuff)(by taxi after the meal)

1st sept
-stayed at hotel all the way till late evening(typhoon has reached Taiwan)
-went to Shilin Nite Mkt(take mrt to Jiantan STN, once alight from the mrt, turn to the right for Exit 1. Turn to the left is Exit 2.)

2nd sept
-went to National Palace Museum ard 10am(take mrt to Shilin STN, exit to ZhongZhang Road, either u take bus or taxi. I took taxi.)
-went to Danshui ard 1pm(take taxi back to Shilin mrt from National Palace Museum, then take mrt to Danshui. Walk ard Danshui, had my late lunch.Buy ferry tix to FisherMan Wharf. There are 2 different company providing this trip, any1 will do, remember to buy to and fro.The wharf doesnt have much stuffs to see..mostly for those who like sightseeing, main activities there are walking ard the bridge, get urself a protrait, wait for the sunset(u can have the full view of the sunset upon the bridge. Then wait for the night to darken, take photos)
-went back to Danshui to buy local stuffs such as Sun Biscuit and other types of biscuit. There are afew shops selling..use ur mouth as research.

3rd sept
-back to sg
