Or Nvidia Shield TV (expensive) or Amazon FireTV/etc. Mi Box seems to be a good start for beginners.

BTW, I myself have doubts whether the Mecool boxes listed as running Android TV are really certified by Google.

No 34 and No 42. Mi Box Global version running official Android TV from Google, not those Mi 3/3c/3s/4/4c boxes targeting Mainland China market.

Android TV:

Hmmm... This one?

Two key indicators: [1] nexflix 4k [2] chromecast

Mecool boxes cannot run chromecast.

No idea, need to see the box as well. The box should be of orange colour.

There are 2 packagings: orange for usa and brown for EU and the rest of the world.

So it is better to use model no to confirm: MDZ-16-AB

For the latest version mibox s, the model no is MDZ-22-AB

I think you are correct to say that you need both to be consider as officially certified but not 100% sure you need Netflix 4K or Netflix HD 720p will do.

But on the second one, you are right that Mecool M8S Pro W and Pro L do not support Google Cast and Netflix HD has stopped working for them as well. The other one A95X is the same.

But apparently Mecool KM8 supports Google Cast as per various reviews. Then again there is report saying that Netflix HD is not working for KM8.

Ref: the following URL lists KM8.
https://sites.google.com/view/droid-tv/streaming-gaming

Still I believe none of the three Mecool device including KM8 (as well as A95X) is certified by Google.

I read a bit more and I am not so sure if Netflix HD is really a prerequisite to be called Certified Android TV.

Case in Point is StarHub Streaming Box. It does not support Netflix and it is called Android TV. After all, Netflix is a different company than Google and it is not as widely available. So why does Google want to make Netflix HD a prerequisite?

Ref: https://www.hardwarezone.com.sg/tech...-streaming-box

Again I do not know the answer. There is also website calling this type of Android TV OEM version of Android TV.

New chips from Amlogic.

https://www.cnx-software.com/2018/09...rds-android-9/

New box as well: X96 Max. Dual band wifi, USB3.0 and Gigabit versions are nice.
https://www.cnx-software.com/2018/09...s905x2-tv-box/

Right now it is not worth the money as S912 based box will be better in terms of HW features at the same price and they only lack USB 3.0.

Probably other vendor will start as well to have S905X2 box and then the price will go down.
Medicated Oil likes this.

Interestingly Mi Box / Mi Box S are not listed. Other than Shield TV, Apple TV, Amazon Fire TV, Roku, XBox and PS4 versions, mostly other from payTV vendors, including PCCW in Hong Kong. SingTel and StarHub and MediaCorp apparently are behind in terms of 4K content.

Still I do not care about 4K myself since my TV and monitor are 1080p only. I am happy with 720p already. I also do not care about Netflix myself.

any TV box to watch Japanese TV channels?
No idea. And unlikely you will get answers here. You may try to ask from the Facebook group mentioned in the discussions.

for netflix, if your box is not certified, you can get only 480p.

so, if the box is not certified, it is better off using other free apps to watch movies/drama, which have 702p, 1080p video.
