ROMPIN: A luxury sports car driver and his passenger narrowly escaped a fiery death when their Ferrari 458 Spider caught fire after crashing into a metal barrier at Km110 of Jalan Kuantan-Segamat near the Gadak bridge today.
The 34-year-old engineer driving the car and his female companion, both foreigners, were unharmed in the 10.40am incident.
Rompin police chief, Superintendent Sharif Shai Sharif Mondoi, said investigations revealed that the pair were part of a 13-car convoy of various Ferrari models travelling from Singapore to Cherating.
He said the driver was a Singaporean while the front seat passenger was a Hong Kong national.
"The driver is believed to have lost control of the vehicle, causing it to skid and smash into the metal divider along the single carriageway. The car then caught fire and was completely destroyed.
"Both occupants managed to escape. The accident did not involve any other vehicles," he said in a statement.
He added that the driver was issued a summons for failing to maintain control of the vehicle, resulting in the crash
