all except 2 of my personal desktop had been AMD since decades ago.
There are some generations where AMD processors are less performant than Intel but some generations, AMD are way more value for money than Intel and current Ryzen/Epyc is one of these generation.

i thought recent years intel cpu run hotter, draws more power and cost more than amd?

They have improved by a lot. But the drawback with the current ones is that idle power draw is still higher than intel's, due to chiplet design. For example, even the "highly inefficient" 14900k only draws 58w at idle/low loads while a 9950x draws 80w. But during loads, AMD is far more efficient.
