Using the education savings

Macbook Air M2 8GB Ram 512 GB SSD $1559
Macbook Air M3 8GB Ram 512 GB SSD $1749 (+190)

Is it worth paying the $190 for the latest version or use the amount to subsize a 8GB ram increase for the M2 version (+270 for 16GB ram)

Using for daily surfing, light excel work and streaming videos

i would say go for more RAM. your usage, i don't think M3 would be too significant.

If use for hwz M2 is sufficient

Safe the upgrading to 16gb also too, as MacOS optimises well

Though I prefer more ram

You need to buy accessors too like usb hub and what have you

What’s your profile like?

For me I am a media person so more ram better for me

If you foresee yourself taking photos, going holidays and making video compilations, you might consider that extra 8gB

M3 if you want

- the fastest chip currently available ( although M4 is round the corner there is always something better at the horizon ) for graphics and video editing work, though the performance is not earth shattering over M2.

- Better noise cancellation / voice capture

- Less power hungry, hence laptop can last longer per charge.

- Dual monitor setup

For light usage, M2 and M3 virtually no difference, I would love to add more RAM though, but if you need dual monitor setup, you need to seriously consider M3.

Honestly I don't forsee myself taking out my laptop much other than the occasional trips (less than 4 times a year). Because of this I have also been considering Mac mini

for backup only u do not need mac mini rite? unless u are still using iphone 14 pro series and older... else 15 pro series and above already supports usb-c 10Gbps usb 3.0 data transfer...

even windows PC can do the same job...

i personally prefer to DIY windows PC.... i DIY a PC in may 2024 with 3 sided glasses case, damn nice... looks like 3 sea views condo...:p
