First day no time for lunch?
Your hotels are 30 mins away from the monkey park by car.
Might be better to stay a night at Shibu Onsen to save time.
The walk to the monkey park will be in snow in Dec. Need more time definitely.

Osaka Rinku Outlet closes at 8pm.

For USJ, the magical parade starts at 7pm. I don't think your kids want to miss it.

To start shopping at Den Den town at 7pm means most shops will be closing soon, around 8pm... same thing with going to Umeda at 7pm (but more shops will open here later... till 9pm)...

Odaiba from 5pm means not enough time to cover those spots listed on your itinerary...

Meiji Shrine at 11pm for countdown??? I haven't done it before at Meiji Jingu but I am quite sure unless you go there much much earlier, you probably won't be able to reach anywhere near the shrine by midnight because of the crowd... but I am worried for your 2 young kids though staying out so late?

how old are your kids? it may be quite tiring for them if u take the overnight bus. or at least shld take it easy on the day after the overnight bus.

an alternative will be to put nagano and osaka together, and cover them using the 7-day JR pass so u dun need to take overnight bus.

i have not been to the countdown at meiji shrine, but i think it is going to be super crowded. not too good to bring kids there coz it is going to be too tiring for them, and they may get lost in the crowd

@dehui87 take note of the early sunset time in Dec
Sunrise and sunset times in Tokyo, December 2015
E.g. Snow Monkey park visit, leaving at 4.30pm would be in pitch dark condition. Year end travelling will always have this trouble of early sun setting.

I think 4.30 is still okay... In the December that just passed, I hiked all the way in Kyoto till 6.10!!!! I saw the last trace of daylight around 5:05pm. The rest was hiked in darkness.... :(

Thanks Cpuer for earlier reply! Was really helpful.

Few questions:
Can someone work out for me if a free pass is worth it for Thomas Land? I will be going Thomas Land with my son. I calculated at least 2200Yen is needed for the rides once. Free Pass should be 4000 for Highland resort guest. My husband can take the free pass as he will be trying the thrill rides and quickly join us at Thomas land.

Along the Yamanote line is good.
Yamanote Line - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Most have connections to either to metro or to other railways companies or lines(except Shinokubo, a small station in Korea Town)

Choose one that best serve your itinerary and your day trips.

These are different kind of trains that make lesser stops than the "local" trains. You can click on one of those Interval Timetable, you will see various kind of trains that makes different kind of stops.

Another question. Am looking at transportation method to and from Narita airport. Saw this special discount tickets on Keisei Skyliner + Metro Pass or Keisei Skyliner + Tokyo Subway Ticket..

Would that mean that those Keisei Skyliner tickets in those combo are inclusive of reservations already? So I do not have to pay an additional fee to get a seat?

All skyliner is reserved seats, as according to their website. So the price paid is inclusive of the reserved seats.
Keisei Skyliner & Tokyo Subway Ticket | Special Discount Tickets | KEISEI Electric Railway

If you buy round trip tix, you have to reserve the seats in advance. Skyliner tix valid for 6months,

any website that can estimate cost of taxi in tokyo? Will be taking taxi from the end point of the airport transport (thinking skyline thru ueno or access narita thru tokyo stn) to our hotel in nihombashi..the distance i can get thru google map...need the taxi cost only so i have a rough idea and I can have enough cash with me on the first day...

also, any idea which of the two end points have a nearer taxi stand? will consider the most convenient between the two.

ill be with a 2yo kid so walking with a lot of luggage is too much hassle.
