gonna travel to Kyoto next month. any recommendation for must-go attractions or must-try food?

will be there for about a week, with my parents and aunt so must also plan a itinerary that is suitable for them too.

found a couple of links from lonely planet and trip advisor but everything seems to be very touristy. can anyone share some tips for a better experience of the local culture?

No. Not unless they specify explicitly. You are responsible for the apt upkeep yourself. Which is why I have friends who don't like AirBNB - because for family holiday you have to take time to clean up the place especially big groups with kids.

You may need to bring your rubbish to the apartment rubbish pointed. Must be sorted accepting to recyclable, plastics, paper etc. Your host should be sending the rules etc.

End April to early may is japan golden week? Bad period to go?

Sent from zhuzhu using GAGT

the three consecutive days 03-05 May

it is bad time because Japanese do not really take much vacation days. So golden week is a really really popular time to go on vacation. Flights within Japan or departing from Japan are all more expensive. Hotels charge more too.

Then there is the higher crowds that will appear at various attractions. If you have to go, I would suggest that you stay in say Tokyo with most ppl outside of Tokyo.... it will be great in Tokyo!

Oh so jap will travel out of Tokyo, so if I intend to stay inside Tokyo only... It will be good cos there won't be as crowded?

Do note many famous shops and restaurants might be closed during GW.

The traffic for day trips was bad. Went to Fuji Shibazakura Festival on the earliest train from Tokyo and the bus journey was supposed to be a 30min ride and we only managed to reach after a 2-hour wait on the bus.

Local bus to Naeba

Hi ... where can I find info on the schedule of local bus from Echigo Yuzawa station to Naeba/Kagura? Is this local bus running everyday or is there any special day for operations? Thanks!

Kanade Hotel is quite new. It is close to Dotombori and subways. If you are going to/fro Kansai Airport, airport bus shuttle is located at OCAT which is 5mins away. There is a supermarket next door, basement has lotsa good food. Cons - slow wifi, non-english speaking staff.

Kyoto is entirely a tourist town. I'd say skip the Nijo castle, Imperial Palace. Some temples are worth visiting like Kiyozumidera and maybe Kinkakuji. If you're visiting in November, Arashiyama will be a good place to view autumn leaves. The Sagano train ride gives u a quick view of the mountains trees and Hozugawa River, but if you have more time and $$, can take the 2hr boat ride. It's not the cruise type but the sampan type which should be more interesting.

If you're not heading to those top restaurants or stalls featured in Michelin guide or Tabelog, especially when you've got a tight budget, I would say it's alright.

I travelled late April mainly for flowers - tulips, nemophila, wisteria and Shibazakura. They only bloom around that period till GW.

I'd be curious what the OP considers local culture and non-touristy. It's not like Kyoto has a Sky Tree, theme parks or Glico Man. 99.9% of what people go see in Kyoto is the local culture.... temples, Gion, Nishiki, etc. I would consider the Sagano train/boat rides touristy, but there are plenty of ways to enjoy Arashiyama away from the touristy shops etc.
