normally does your ID/contractor install FOC, or do they charge, or do you engage your own handyman service?

Depends on how complicated the items are to assemble.

If it is mostly loose, freestanding, relatively simple items, probably by the hour rate.

If more complicated, like needing to drill mounting points into the wall, needing accurate leveling, etc, probably will cost more.

Seeing that they are just providing an assembling & installation service, they may get quite pricey.

An alternative way...

If you have friends who are handy with tools, might as well treat them to a meal or an outing and get some help from them.

But can't blame them for wrongly installed stuff, after all... they are not pros :s13:

thanks! but by the hour will they purposely take their own sweet time? lol. i have a few things im buying from taobao, like makeup table, drawer chests, wooden blinds, bookcase, tv console, shoe cabinet etc. i reckon those will come flat packed like ikea's furniture. i requested for quote from some handyman's website, they mostly charge by the item's size. a tv console for eg cost $80 to assemble.

Well, I suppose they would have to have a certain amount of professionalism and take a reasonable amount of time to assemble things...

I mean, if the item only has 10 screws to tighten, and they take 2 hours...

$80 to assemble a TV console :s22:

At that rate I also want to do... :s13:

Bear in mind Taobao items... got assembly instructions? In English?

Some items may need a while to decipher the instructions... so that may account for the time wasting.

did you buy your furniture from taobao?
yes bought from taobao. TV console table with drawers. coffee table with drawers. dining table with storage. bar chairs. study tables with shelves on top. storage racks. one bedside table. one dressing table. not an easy task i must say. some don't come with instructions too. and some holes don't fit in so we had to drill ourselves.

Did self assembly for my house as well.
It isn't super difficult but highly advisable to get the help of pros if your furniture have doors and door hinges such as wardrobe or shoe racks. It's a nightmare to get it be be leveled. Mine was still abit off after hours of adjustments. :s13:

just get a electric drill to spare your hands from the strain.

it is not easy to assemble. and you really need to read those manual properly.

thanks guys! because i bought 6-drawer chest from ikea before, took me quite awhile to assemble, so abit scared now. my hubby has a black & decker drill, somehow dunno whether is because we're not skilled enough or the drill not powerful enough we always break those drill bits. guess i will try and install by myself first, really cannot then get someone's help.

Power tools can help you get the job done easier, but they have a bad habit of stripping out the - or + grooves in screws.

Also, when using the power tool, you may not be able to 'feel' resistance - so if you are going in at the wrong angle and starting to strip out the screw threading, you may not realise till too late.

I always use a manual screwdriver to tighten the last part.

Are you using the correct type of drill bit? And the correct drill?

There are different types of bits for wood, metal and masonry (brick or concrete).

If you are drilling into brick or concrete, you will need a hammer drill.

@zzzzzz87 - all yr taobao furniture comes flat packed? because there are some that are really assembled, then its gonna take up lots of space during shipping! do u need to specify to the seller u dont need them to 组装?
yes mine came flat packed. mine not by choice. seller already sells it like that. :)
