What do you mean by how to get to mount cook? If you meant aoraki/mt cook village then you can easily drive there from lake tekapo down SH8. I drove from CHC to aoraki in 4h, if you start from tekapo it should take around 1h+

i have been to cromwell instead of arrowtown is a good place to chill and lunch too...

cromwell has an old town area where the cafes will be, the old town area is also infront of the lake... lunch liao can jus walk around...

it's also "more middle" than arrowtown as a pitstop between tekapo and QS...

u r planning to jus sit in the heli over FJG, or will do the ice hike as well?

tekapo's mt john has a cafe on top too... u can drive up... cafe chill and enjoy views...

TBH, FERGBURGER in Queenstown is overhyped lol.. I think fat boys in SG tastes better.

All the steaks in NZ will hardly go wrong one lol...

I think you meant taking the $500 30 mins heli-ride from FJG to mount Cook and back? Actually when u go from Lake Tepako to Arrowhead, you can stay at Mount Cook instead. (Personally, I liked the stay there)

Assuming you flying in from Singapore, I think Day 1 can be tiring for the driver.
1. You will be driving a CV which you need to get use to.
2. Driving time need to estimate around 30% more since CV will be slower
3. NZ i think is ~4hrs ahead so you will start driving at 8pm SG time and arrive say past midnight. Also if you are traveling in winter the daylight is shorter so by 5PM will be dark liao

I think better play safe and rest in CHC for 1 night

Actually day 10 if got time can consider driving down to akaroa or even staying there. That place quite nice.
Flight price is reasonable if you tell me it's for 4pax..

For those planning to go to NZ during the winter season, do remember that the days are short and the nights are long. Please don't drive too early in the morning as there could be black ice on the road.

Hi All,

I am planning a 14 days self-drive south island trip in June 11-25. Below is my itinerary so far. Appreciate your advice and suggestions.

Day 1 - Arrive at 9.30am. Pick up car and drive to Hokitika. Stay for the night
Day 2 - (Blank, any inputs for this pls?)
Day 3 - (Blank, any inputs for this pls?)
Day 4 - Drive to FJG
Day 5 - Drive to Wanaka via Haast
Day 6 - Wanaka
Day 7 - Wanaka - Arrowtown - Queenstown
Day 8 - Queenstown
Day 9 - Day Tour to Milford Sound
Day 10 - QT to Lake Tekapo
Day 11 - Lake Tekapo / Mt John
Day 12 - Lake Tekapo to Christchurch
Day 13 - Day tour to Kaikoura
Day 14 - Back to SG

Hoping to catch the Southern Light at Lake Tekapo, so according to the moon phase, I should be at Lake Tekapo from Day 10 onwards.

I have 2 empty days at the beginning of the trip. Can anyone give me suggestion where should I go?

Also, is it recommended to drive a SUV in June? Or a sedan car is good enough.

Thanks in advance for your feedbacks!

you are going at winter season, it is the best time to try skiing at Queenstown. When you driving between Wanaka and Queenstown, you will most likely drive on the Crown Range Road. it is a beautiful scenic drive. However, make sure you plan ahead for that drive. Sometimes there are snowstorm and you can be stuck on the road. Towards Wanaka, you will pass by Cardona ski field or the famous Cardona pub.

Kaikoura - if you intend to go there, I suggest you read the maps properly. You do know that there was a big earthquake in kaikoura and that changed the whole landscape and roading towards Kaikoura

Crown range Rd is windy as hell, and somewhat enjoyable to drive (once).
As for kaikoura, after the earthquake the town was cut off again due to landslides/mudslides after heavy showers. Do check the news and maps if you are heading there.

Anyone can recommend a good car rental company?

I rented with Omega, it was cheaper than Apex when I rented. Pretty good and reliable, picking up and dropping off the car was a breeze as well. Also like the fact that it doesn't have any decals with comoany name/logo that show it is a rented car.

you can spend time in wanaka if u intend to do some short hikes... there are those that take up half or day or so only...

u shld spend more time in queenstown... skydive... ski... hikes... drive to various spots around queenstown for pics (e.g. glenorchy)

Would it be better to rent a campervan or just rent a car?

I checked renting a car for the entire trip would cost me 1k including insurance. Im renting from apex. Renting a campervan would cost me 1.7k from wilderness campervan but not inclusive of thorough insurance..
