Anyone can compare Astrill to ExpressVPN in terms of speed for US based servers? Thanks!

I have both but I am not in SG anymore. The thing is US Netflix for example works on all US Astrill servers (except for VIA servers) while ExpressVPN on selected only. ExpressVPN will always be slower as they use AES 256 encryption, while Astrill is using Blowish 128bit. For geo restricted access the advantage of ExpressVPN is their MediaStreamer DNS which works quite well (even for US Netflix), while Astrill advantage is router applet plugin (Tomato, DD-WRT, Asus-Merlin), which is much faster compared to built in VPN especially with their RouterPro protocol.

HMA has 7 day trial here , you need to enter cc but won't be charged if you cancel within 7 days. I was always curious how well they with their virtual servers (connecting to one location e.g. Singapore but appearing as in US). Will give them a try.
They're the most advertised VPN in the world and have the largest number of servers in the world.

However their speeds are terrible, they obviously log all your activities (do not expect any privacy with HMA) in spite of claiming the contrary as they gave up lulsec team. Expect all their IPs to be blocked (servers recognising you're connecting through a VPN) because they're the most famous in the world such as Netflix / niche forums. They also only permit 2 devices only which is among the lowest in the industry.

It's honestly hard to recommend them. I would most certainly try before committing if you're insistent.

In my experience that title goes to ExpressVPN. I tried HMA and found their new Mac client is very limited in options. I didn't like it it the end. But the 7 day free trial is worth mentioning for those who would like to try.

Haha ExpressVPN is advertised quite heavily in Singapore but I've barely heard of it in Europe and the cost was off-putting as well.

Ended up using it as I was looking for a Singapore server on a short notice and PIA wasn't fast enough.

Do you know who has the fastest Singapore VPN server? Options do seem rather limited compared to US / EU servers.

At my times in SG when I had 300Mbps from ViewQwest the fasters was Astrill for sure. I was even maxing my download and upload. Astrill has (had?) very interesting server called Singapore 1 (USA), that was SG based server with US IP, so perfect for geo-location streaming. Things could have changed since then though.

My VPN is almost expire, any recommendation? Previous was on ASTRILL but not renewing as it getting expensive so want to jump ship. Heard HMA is good, pureVPN is good. So which is better?

i would recommend purevpn. The speed is good. Another benefit is you can avail their new year as its not expired yet.

Thanks for your replies guys, I will consider switching to Astrill.

While cost is obviously an important factor, other factors that I consider to be more important are speed, variety, encryption and most importantly, no logging of user activities.

Do you guys select a Singapore VPN server? Or one that's in the U.S.? Seems like it's safer to use a server in the U.S. But the speeds are slower.

Hi Guys,

Have been with Astrill for 4 years and since last year, I can't use their China VPN to access those Chinese Geoblocked content. PC and Iphone works well but not Android. Can you guys recommend me a VPN that has a good China server?

TIA!

I used to run Astrill on my N66 last year. But I find the VPN gets disconnected frequently. I am just afraid the disconnection happens while climbing.

So now I am using the Astrill windows client instead. The 100% kill switch is really effective.

Had used a few different VPN providers. Requirement: Japan servers
Here are my quick comment on them.

OverPlay
Quite fast, free server switching anytime, but often had downtime or slow down. Tried StrongVPN as I heard good things about them.

StrongVPN
Fast servers, ability to pause subscription. Limited server switching per month, allocated amount of users per server, if server full you can't connect to it, so it is best to stay with your preferred server. Cancelled OverPlay as it works well. However, they had a relocation of my preferred server and no longer recognized as in Japan. Apparently, they needed IP geo-location databases around the world to update their new IP address which requires a lot of time, therefore I switched.

ExpressVPN
Very fast servers, very easy to subscribe and ready to use, it even register itself into your Windows so your OS will stay connected whenever you boot up without needing to run their software first. However, something happened to my preferred server again, think their OpenVPN server went down and their PPTP server are very slow, therefore I opted for a refund...

VyprVPN
Currently using, fast server as well, many option in their software. You can choose the OpenVPN encryption strength as well as their own Chameleon tech which they claim will mask VPN traffic. They also provide their OpenVPN files for ASUSWRT. Tested on AC88U and it worked.
