hi all, i am a finance degree holder from an average american university with an inferior gpa of 2.8/4.0. after college, i worked in a bank for 2 years. not a very prestigious one. i did compliance, assistant relationship manager and sales in commercial banking (at least not selling credit cards hehe)

i'm planning to apply for NUS Medicine Undergrad AY20/21 but with my performance so far, it seems hopeless... besides my horrible grades, i dont really have a solid science background. i was taking foundation courses for medicine in freshman year but could not continue the following year. i did take pure chemistry and pure biology for Os but i scored B for those. my olevels results were painfully medicore (L1R5: 14) and did not take As.

a little backstory...

freshman semester 1 GPA: 2.9/4.0
sophomore semester 1 GPA: 3.1/4.0

the tragedy happened in junior year when i fell so sick i had to return to singapore, skipping my finals. had to retake them along with my other classes. including group projects (i had to redo them alone). my gpa fell drastically. when it was time to decide on a major, i picked finance because any other science course would have been too rigorous and other than science, i had no other interests. business was my best bet. versatile and given the workload, it could help with my GPA.

TLDR; i managed to raise my GPA from 1.9 to 2.8

questions:

1) will having a degree/work experience help with MBBS?
2) can i take BMAT to increase my chances?
3) or would taking As be more logical?
4) will interning at clinics help?
5) with such horrible scores, can i actually apply for MD?

last but not least, should i:

1) apply as a transfer applicant as i'm a singaporean who is a graduate of a university?
2) apply under aptitude-based (discretionary) admission?

a lengthy post but i wanted to provide relevant details so as to receive more accurate answers to save everyone's time. thank you so much for reading and if you decide to respond, i appreciate your advice in advance!

Sadly it’s so competitive you don’t stand a chance even if u tried under discretionary admission. U can certainly take BMAT but what kinda of scores? 7?
If so No harm trying if u are at 90%tile

Why do you want to study medicine ?
Your background seems not in science especially biology.

Medical curriculum or MBBS these days are written by pharmaceutical companies with agenda sell their synthethic (oil based compound) drugs. These western medicinal drugs have serious side affects.

Many study doctor medicine to be rich and medicine doctors treat profession to obtain their riches.

well you have the cash to go overseas for your first degree, why not consider going overseas for your MBBS.

im not sure, but maybe Ireland might be more forgiving of your GPA if your MCAT is good. Should have a look at the Atlantic bridge program.

https://www.atlanticbridge.com/

In their FAQ

Because GPA can be very subjective, the Irish Medical Schools, with the exception of Trinity College and University College Dublin, do not typically use specific guidelines around GPA for admissions purposes. For instance, Student A may have a slightly lower GPA than Student B, but Student A may have a much higher degree of difficulty in his / her degree or high school program. Also, many schools (especially in Canada) do not use a GPA system. So, there are many variables involved and therefore GPA is not always a useful system for assessing students for medical school as it can be misleading.

Consequently, the Admissions Committees tend to consider every application individually and on its own merits, taking into account (among other things) the degree of difficulty involved in the undergraduate degree or high school curriculum, the competitiveness of the school, the course load carried by the student, how the student performed academically and a number of other factors.

However, if applying to Trinity College your GPA or equivalent should be a minimum of 3.3 on a 4.0 scale. If you are applying to University College Dublin, your GPA or equivalent should be a minimum of 3.08 on a 4.0 scale.

NUS and NTU medicine is for undergrad only. If you lack the ability of finding out the answers via a simple google search, I sincerely doubt medicine is the right choice for you

If you have a degree already, you need to apply to Duke-NUS

Hahaha. Thank god for evolution which will probably extinguish your lineage but while you are alive pls don't spread your nonsense here.

Btw not true that u cannot do undergrad MBBS if you have a degree already. There are a few chaps in nus as such. One guy had a 1st class in electrical engineering even. However if u want to do graduate MD, u need a degree. But generally u need to have good grades.

Anyway, ts ah, I think u need to move on with Ur life la. Your grades are terrible. It's not easy to get such terrible grades really. Yes , u might be sick or whatever when u are having exams etc , but there are a lot of deserving students locally. Some of them went thru difficult phases in their lives and still get good grades ( eg lymphoma treatment during A levels, regular skin graft for a burns lady, one had PTSD from rape etc are some i meet).

Very few pple will give u a spot and deprive someone else more deserving.

Only schools which can profit off you will give u a spot. Irish schools, Australia schools are your realistic options.

And research, come on, you don't need a MBBS to do research. In fact u cant meaningful basic research with a MBBS because it's a professional degree.

Don't even bother. I went for a Duke-NUS talk. Those who get accepted are either from Ivy League, or very good unis like U of Michigan, Cornell. Must be elite, and have more than 3 recommendation letters (which is hard to get, coz you want ideally from people who have medicine-related experience for credibility).

Unfortunately, Singapore limits the number of people who can do certain professions. If die die want to do medicine, pls study overseas. From young I wanted to be a doctor because my grandmother got cancer. But life has been disappointing, first I only scored 7A1 in O lvls and not good enough to get in the best JC, without taking Chinese Language & Literature under the Chinese Language Elective Program which gives 2 additional bonus points (and I got in 2nd worst class in Hwa Chong JC), and only A in Physics, Maths in A Levels; B for Chemistry and C for Chinese Literature.

After that I can only apply to NUS Business liao, even NUS accounting also cannot get in. Continued to do super badly since I hated the course, graduated with 2nd lower. Can only get many lousy low-paying jobs, started off with $2.6k. Luckily, I changed jobs a few times, and with a good resume, and also high scores in GRE (331/340) and TOEFL (112/120), I got into many US universities for MS in Finance.

Haha, thanks! I got into top 30-50 world-ranked schools which is good enough for me. Key thing is must be affordable (ROI). I didn't bother to apply any Ivies because I know I won't get in.
