I have been using HTPC connecting it with a old 40" LCD tv. It is convenient to me as I can just use it like a PC for music, movie & surfing web with a big screen while lying on my bed.

So im finally going to upgrade my tv to a 4k android tv i've heard an android tv works just like a pc ..

does it still make sense or have any merits to use a HTPC on an android tv?

Reminds me of my dream to own a HTPC or Shuttle PC almost twenty years ago.

With the advancement of technology, I am now glad with Apple TV box. Don’t really trust the in-built Android that come with the TV.

Do you play games on HTPC?

Then again, do you have sound system connect to HTPC? Another consideration. I have the impression that slim TV sound system not good better to have sound bar or external

My HTPC actually kept getting downgraded as more and more parts spoilt... Now using an Ivy Bridge laptop which still surprisingly has sufficient performance.

I'll use Android if my PC is too slow i.e. 4k videos. But otherwise, HTPC is just more flexible. Also you can adblock youtube.

A good Android box will feel like your smartphone with extra features. This makes it more intuitive for Gen Z and boomers.

The android box was really laggy when using their browser, alot of apps cannot open and incompatible. that was the only box that i have tried. I trust that a HTPC would be a better choice as it would be working like a PC can do anything. Yeah blocking ad in youtube is paramount so i guess htpc will be the one for me. thank for the reminder.

a little off topic, how is the experience like to watch content lower than 4k on a 4k tv? I heard got auto-upscaling, is the pic quality good after the upscaling?
