Every Video Game Movie & TV Show Adaptation In Development

Here are all the video game movie and TV adaptations that are currently in development. Video games are getting a resurgence in media as companies are gaining confidence in their performance. In 2020, the Sonic the Hedgehog movie came out as the highest grossing video game movie ever in the US - and Nintendo's Detective Pikachu released the year prior surpassed even Sonic in the worldwide box office. The Resident Evil franchise is still going, with November 2021 releasing the franchise's latest installment, Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City. Also in November, Netflix released the beautifully animated Arcane: League of Legends series, that currently has a 100% critical score on Rotten Tomatoes, marking it as one of 2021's best animated TV shows.

With the increasing popularity of many video game movie and TV adaptations, there are naturally a number of franchises with new installments currently in development. Video game adaptations are making their promotional rounds on the internet, with the untitled Mario movie getting a particularly loud response from audiences due to its unusual casting decisions. While responses to Chris Pratt voicing Mario were mixed, there's a lot of hype building around almost every currently announced video game adaptation

Here are all the video game movie and TV adaptations with a relatively high likelihood of being released. While many of the mentioned titles listed do not have a set date, production is going smoothly enough that a near-future release is likely, so long as production doesn't face any serious impediments from the likes of the COVID-19 pandemic or any other external forces.

'Mythic Quest' World Expands With New Series 'Mere Mortals'

Mythic Quest is a workplace comedy created by Its Always Sunny In Philadelphia co-creators Rob McElhenney and Charlie Day alongside Always Sunny writer Megan Ganz. The series is set inside a fictional video game studio as chaos ensues as the employees prepare for the next big update for its popular game. The series follows everyone in the company from the owner and creator, to the programmers, to play-testers. Now, Mere Mortals is primed to expand that focus. The new series will be an eight-episode “extension series” that will “explore the lives of employees, players, and fans who are impacted by the game.”

Not much more is known about the new series at this time. But, it is said to be in a similar vein to the “departure” episodes of the flagship series. Each season of the flagship series has a “departure” episode or two that breaks from the show's regular format to focus on a single character. Season 1 has the acclaimed "A Dark Quiet Death", which didn’t feature any of the main cast and instead brought in guest stars Jake Johnson and Cristin Milioti to show the life cycle of a different game and video game studio. Season 2 had a pair of episodes "Backstory!" and "Peter" which turned the focus to F. Murray Abraham’s character as his backstory is explored.

Mere Mortals is created by Ashly Burch, John Howell Harris, and Katie McElhenney. All three are writers for Mythic Quest and are well acquainted with the world. Burch also stars in the series and wrote the fan-favorite quarantine episode. McElhenney also wrote the previously mentioned acclaimed "A Dark Quiet Death". The new series will also see original Mythic Quest creators Ganz, Rob McElhenney, and Day serve as executive producers alongside David Hornsby, Nick Frenkel, Michael Rotenberg, Jason Altman, and Margaret Boykin.

AppleTV+ going all in on Mythic Quest is no surprise. It was one of the first series to premiere on the streamer and was almost instantly a big hit with fans and critics. The series was also renewed for a third and fourth season not long after the second season finished airing. Now it is just time to wait and see if Mere Mortals can capture the same magic.

Stay tuned to Collider for any future updates on Mere Mortals and watch Mythic Quest as it currently airs its third season on AppleTV+. Also, check out the trailer for Mythic Quest Season 3 below:

'God of War' Live-Action Series Ordered at Prime Video

Are you a fan of the famous Greek God of War, Kratos? If you are then we have news that would surely ignite your “blades of chaos”. In co-production with Sony Pictures Television and PlayStation Productions, Prime Video has announced that it will officially order a God of War live-action series.

This is certainly going to be a hit with fans of the game franchise and Amazon has offered insight into what the focus of the new series would be. The show will be based on the massively popular 2018 game from Santa Monica Studios. Kratos has had a blood-soaked and battle-ridden past in ancient Greece, and the god of war now seeks a new path, setting aside his weapons to live peacefully with his wife, Faye, and his son, Atreus in the Norse realm of Midgard. However, his wife soon dies and Kratos and his son set off to fulfill her final wish – spreading her ashes from the highest peak. This new quest will bring Kratos face to face with new foes and monsters, not to mention setting him on a collision course with the new gods of this realm. Some things will never change. The journey will also test the limits of the relationship he shares with his son.

The creative team tasked with this new series includes The Wheel of Time’s Rafe Judkins, who will serve as showrunner and executive producer. Mark Fergus and Hawk Ostby have boarded the series as writers and executive producers with Cory Barlog also coming on as executive producer. “We are so proud and excited to be working with our friends at Amazon Studios and our partners at PlayStation Productions to adapt this beautiful and heartbreaking game into a premium live-action series,” said Katherine Pope, president of Sony Pictures Television Studios. “Rafe, Mark and Hawk are crafting a transportive series that charts a path through the ancient mythological journey of Kratos.”

“The God of War is a compelling, character-driven franchise that we believe will captivate our global customers as much with its expansive and immersive worlds as its rich storytelling,” says Amazon Studios' head of global television Vernon Sanders., Head of PlayStation Productions, Asad Qizilbash also added, “God of War is one of PlayStation’s most awarded video games, so we’re excited to partner with Sony Pictures Television and Amazon Studios to bring our beloved franchise to fans and new audiences in a bold and authentic way.”

The God of War game series is one of the most popular games ever made. Starting off in 2005, the series has received much critical acclaim and immense financial success along the way selling over 52 million copies. The 2018 sequel was equally well accepted and the 2022 sequel, God of War: Ragnarok, was a top contender in several Game of the Year lists.

Alien's TV Series Already Missed The Point Of The Franchise

Set 70 years in the near future, the Alien series will focus on the burgeoning Weyland-Yutani Corporation that forms the backbone of later Alien narratives. This unscrupulous, profiteering mega-corporation will be shown to dabble in deep space transport, planetary colonization, and terraforming. The Alien TV show will emphasize the company's corporate training programs, dispatches in space, and ulterior motives. This of course includes Weyland-Yutani's experimentation with Xenomorphs, which will undoubtedly lead to carnage.

What Noah Hawley Has Said About FX's Alien

These narrative plans have been backed up by the Alien series' creator Noah Hawley, who confirmed (via Esquire) that the vast majority of the show will take place on a version of Earth. Hawley's Alien show, therefore, will focus on the inequalities and social divides ingrained in the futuristic Earth's culture, with Hawley stating: "you will see what happens when the inequality we’re struggling with now isn’t resolved. If we as a society can’t figure out how to prop each other up and spread the wealth, then what’s going to happen to us?" According to Hawley, this social commentary is derived from the original 1979 Alien's characters and their wider world, with the showrunner describing Alien as "this blue-collar space-trucker world in which Yaphet Kotto and Harry Dean Stanton are basically Waiting for Godot. They’re like Samuel Beckett characters, ordered to go to a place by a faceless nameless corporation."

Alongside his clear focus on the social commentary of both contemporary and futuristic cultures, Hawley’s Alien series is stated to mark a huge departure from what franchise fans have become accustomed to. In a separate Vanity Fair interview, Hawley expands on this approach, saying: “The Alien stories are always trapped. Trapped in a prison, trapped in a spaceship. I thought it would be interesting to open it up a little bit so that the stakes of ‘What happens if you can’t contain it?’ are more immediate.” This new focus certainly marks a stark deviation from Ridley Scott's claustrophobic formula, with Hawley's Alien sounding like it will focus on big picture narratives instead of the insular, terrifying settings of Alien, Aliens, and Alien: Resurrection.

Why The Alien TV Series Has Already Missed The Point Of The Franchise

While original Alien director Ridley Scott's comments about the Alien series may be prematurely harsh, Noah Hawley's grand plans suggest that FX's show has already missed the point of the franchise, shedding what made Alien 1979 so compelling in favor of a more grandiose storyline. Undoubtedly, Ridley Scott's Alien remains the best franchise entry due to its insular setting and multi-faceted, intimate character portrayals. These human touches and close-quarters introspection conspire to make Alien a stunning exploration of claustrophobia and psychological trauma in a pressure cooker setting - practically impossible to replicate on Earth.

As such, Hawley's Alien is already thinking too big in both its scope and attempts to create new Alien lore via Weyland-Yutani, making it feel like generic sci-fi TV fare from the get-go. While Hawley's ambition must be applauded, as must his willingness to shed the temptation of using original Alien characters, other aspects of his series plan fundamentally work against the nature of the franchise itself. Like Ridley Scott's future vision for the Alien franchiseexploring artificial intelligence — Hawley's Alien series plans just don't seem to grasp why the first movie is a classic. In particular, Hawley's comments on the Alien stories being "trapped" are the most concerning, with the inability to escape ratcheting up the Alien movies' tension and stakes in a way an open-world setting such as Earth simply cannot. Despite Hawley's assertion that the stakes will be higher in FX's Alien, the planet's fate feels like a hollow storyline that's already been played out in countless science-fiction entries before the new Alien TV series.

Even the Alien prequels in Prometheus and Alien: Covenant understood the franchise's reliance on insular settings, stranding their respective crews on harsh worlds with little to no chance of escape. Despite their flaws, both prequel movies successfully convey the dread aspect of the Alien franchise as hope slowly ebbs away from the human characters battling the Xenomorphs. The video game Alien: Isolation is another example of this formula achieving success, as the game is essentially an interactive experience featuring the original movie's core elements. Indeed, Alien's TV series has already missed the mark tonally for its own franchise, making Hawley's show feel more like a faceless sci-fi story with the Alien name tacked onto it rather than a direct prequel to Ridley Scott's seminal 1979 movie.

Why Is The Alien Franchise So Difficult To Adapt?

Despite a reputation as a tough IP to work with, the Alien franchise should be one of the easiest to adapt. The mistake being made by the Alien TV series, like every new installment since Aliens, is trying to put a new spin on an idea that really doesn't need one. The 1719 setting of 2022 movie Prey, even while breaking the rules of Alien's sister franchise Predator, proved it's possible to make huge alterations to an Alien or Predator movie while remaining true to what made the originals such classics. All the Alien franchise has to do is make a similar movie or show to Alien/Aliens, but with the horror and isolation magnified by contemporary special effects and a few decades of advances in cinematography.

While the deeper and broader sci-fi themes explored in recent installments are ambitious, they're not needed. There are many other franchises that tackle these socio-political themes far better than any Alien movie could. Any Alien should be primarily about Xenomorphs - the titular alien of Aliens. They're the unique selling point. In fact, the best Alien project since Alien and Aliens has been the first-person shooter game Alien: Isolation for this exact reason. If the Alien franchise intends to continue any future adaptation needs to embrace its space horror roots.

Yellowstone's Dutton Family Tree Explained In Full

At the center of the Yellowstone universe is the Dutton family. Owners of the largest ranch in Montana and committed to family, the Dutton clan feels like a more modern version of the Targaryen family from House of the Dragon. Yellowstone's spin-offs, 1883 and 1923, both offer a more detailed look into the current seven generations of the Dutton family.

While Yellowstone has primarily centered on John Dutton III, the spin-offs have shown how the family came into power. However, the family tree is unclear regarding how the 1883 and 1923 Dutton characters are related to John III. Harrison Ford's character, who is at the center of 1923, is not a direct ancestor of Kevin Costner's character, muddying the direct lineage established with Tim McGraw's James Dutton in 1883. Two more prequels set in the 1940s and the 1960s will serve as more connective tissue to the modern-day Dutton's.

1883

James and Margaret Dutton

1883 introduces the patriarch and matriarch of the Dutton Family in James (Tim Mcgraw) and Margaret (Faith Hill). Both were involved in the Civil War on the Confederate side, with the family having origins in Tennessee. The couple had three kids; Elsa, John, and Spencer. The family originally had plans to relocate to Oregon by way of the Oregon trail until Elsa's death at the end of 1883 season 1.

Elsa Dutton

Elsa Dutton (Isabel May) is the eldest child of James and Margaret. Elsa also serves as the narrator of 1883 and among its central characters. She was a skilled horseback rider, as well as a cowgirl. She fell in love with a cowboy named Ennis and sought to wed him before he was killed. She later found another lover named Sam, who was a Comanche warrior. They planned to spend their life together after the Dutton family settled, but Elsa succumbed to wounds she received from an arrow attack.

John Dutton Sr.

John Dutton Sr. (James Badge Dale) is the namesake of Yellowstone's John Dutton and is the second child of James and Margaret. He is just a child in 1883, but is a grown man by the events of 1923. John, along with his parents, survives the treacherous route the Dutton family takes in order to settle in Montana eventually. However, John's story doesn't have a happy ending, as he is killed early on in 1923. His death causes some confusion with the Dutton family tree, as he is only shown to have one kid, Jack, with his wife Emma, calling into question who John Dutton III's father is.

Claire Dutton

Claire Dutton (Dawn Olivieri) was the sister of James Dutton and the aunt of Elsa, John, and Spencer. Claire initially started on the voyage out west with her brother. She passed away not far into the trip, as she died by suicide after bandits killed her daughter.

1923

Jacob and Cara Dutton

Portrayed by Harrison Ford and Helen Mirren, Jacob and Cara are the patriarch and matriarch of the Dutton family at the start of the 1923 spin-off. The two oversee the ranch after the deaths of James and Margaret. They also raise their surviving kids John Sr, and Spencer, as their own, along with John's son Jack. They have no biological children of their own and are not in the direct lineage of the current Dutton clan.

Jack Dutton

Jack Dutton is the only currently revealed son of John Sr and his wife, Emma. Jack works on the ranch under the guidance of his great-uncle Jacob. One of the series' mysteries is whether Jack is the same John II that is the father of Kevin Costner's John III. The true nature of John III's father will likely be revealed in the 1940s and 60s spin-offs currently planned.

Spencer Dutton

Spencer (Brandon Sklenar) is the youngest child of James and Margaret, having not yet been born during the 1883 timeline. In 1923, Spencer is in Africa after serving in World War I. He is currently on the way to Montana after being sent for by his aunt Cara. Spencer will likely assume a leadership role with the declining health of Jacob and the injuries to his nephew, Jack.

Yellowstone

John Dutton III

John (Kevin Costner) is the current patriarch of the Dutton family and Yellowstone's main character. Not only is he the head of the ranch, but he has also become the governor of Montana, surpassing the exploits of his predecessors. With his late wife, Evelyn, he is the father of three biological children, Lee, Beth, and Kayce, and an adopted son, Jamie.

Lee Dutton

Lee Dutton (Dave Annable) is the eldest child of John Dutton III and the first member of the 6th generation of the seven generations of the Dutton family. Lee was tragically killed in Yellowstone season 1 after a confrontation with Broken Rock Reservation members.

Beth Dutton

Beth Dutton (Kelly Reilly) is John Dutton III’s second child and only daughter. Beth is Rip Wheeler's wife, the ranch's current manager. She is also a shrewd businesswoman and protector of the family. Beth has a strong rivalry with her adopted brother, Jamie.

Jamie Dutton

Jamie Dutton Sr. (Wes Bentley) is a complicated family member. Jamie is the adopted son of John and Evelyn, and the biological son of Garrett Randall, who allegedly killed his birth mother. Jamie eventually kills his biological father and has an estranged relationship with John after being disinherited. This has led to an intense rivalry between Jamie and Beth. Jamie has a son with his ex-campaign manager Christina named Jamie Jr.

Kayce Dutton

Kayce Dutton (Luke Grimes) is the youngest child of John and Evelyn. Kayce is the new Montana Livestock Commissioner, like his father was before him. He initially had an estranged relationship with his father because he married Monica, a woman from the Broken Rock Reservation. They have since reconciled due to John wanting to be close to his grandson, Tate. Along with Tate, Kayce had another son, John IV, who died in childbirth.

Tate Dutton

Tate is the youngest biological descendant of the Dutton family. Tate is bi-racial, culminating over a century of unease between the Native Americans and the Dutton clan. It is unknown how long the Yellowstone series will last, but Tate taking over the Yellowstone Ranch would be culturally significant. Tate is currently following in the family's footsteps and learning how to be a cowboy.

Multiple 'Billions' Spinoffs in the Works at Showtime

In the wake of its merger with Paramount+, Showtime is getting into the franchise business. Its longest-running show, Billions, has four spinoffs in the works, including Millions and Trillions. Entertainment Weekly reports that Millions will be a spinoff focusing on young up-and-comers in the high-stakes world of high finance, while Trillions will reportedly be a soapier exploration of the mega-rich, akin to Dallas or Dynasty. There are also spinoffs in the works set in Miami and London; their full concepts are still in the works.

The so-called "expanded universe" approach follows the pattern of Paramount's biggest hit, Yellowstone, which has expanded its universe with the prequel series 1883 and 1923, and will soon expand further with Bass Reeves and 6666. This pivot was foreshadowed last month, when new Showtime head Chris McCarthy stated, "We have already begun conversations with our production partners about what content makes sense moving forward and which shows have franchise potential." It also follows a period of post-merger culling at Showtime, when many of the network's fledgling series, including American Gigolo and Let the Right One In, were canceled

The move comes at an interesting time for Billions, which has now become Showtime's longest-running series. Debuting in 2016, show follows the rivalry between unscrupulous hedge fund manager Bobby Axelrod (Damien Lewis) and driven US Attorney Chuck Rhoades (Paul Giamatti), and their continuing attempts to destroy each other - or at least it did, until Lewis departed the show following season 5. Axelrod was written out of the series, fleeing to Switzerland, and his role at his hedge fund (and in the series) was taken over by Michael Prince (Corey Stoll) in season 6, which concluded last spring. Despite this upheaval, the series has continued to be a ratings winner for Showtime, and its seventh season will debut later this year. Showtime's exploration of a galaxy of spinoffs is, of course, a further vote of confidence in the program. Billions also stars Maggie Siff, David Costabile, Condola Rashad, Asia Kate Dillon, Jeffrey DeMunn, Daniel Breaker, and Sakina Jaffrey.

The spinoff series will be executive produced by Billions co-creators Brian Koppelman and David Levien. The duo have had a production deal with Showtime since 2019.

Billions' seventh season will premiere later this year on Showtime. Stay tuned to Collider for future updates.

“Dexter: Origins” – Prequel Series Ordered by Showtime Plus “Dexter: New Blood” Will Continue

It was rumored just last week that “Dexter” would soon return in an upcoming prequel series, and Showtime has confirmed those rumors with the Wall Street Journal this week.

Wall Street Journal reports, “The network has ordered an origin-story prequel to Dexter, a serial-killer drama that dates back to 2006. Showtime is also exploring separate spinoffs based on the back stories of compelling Dexter characters, including the Trinity Killer.”

“The origin story will be set in Dexter’s hometown of Miami, and will touch on stories of real-life serial killers of the time period,” the site’s report continues.

UPDATE: The prequel series is officially titled “Dexter: Origins.”

“Dexter: Origins” will dramatize young Dexter Morgan at the outset of his transition into the avenging serial killer he would become. Set in the Miami that was a hotbed of real serial killers of his time, the show will begin as Dexter graduates college to join Miami Metro, where he meets younger versions of many of the characters we came to know in the original show.

And, of course, the show will also focus on Dexter’s family, including a very-much-alive Harry and a very formidable, teenage Deb.

As for “Dexter: New Blood,” last year’s hit revival series, it had been reported last week that the series would not be returning for a second season. But it seems that report was incorrect.

The network has announced this afternoon that they’re also developing a new version of “Dexter: New Blood,” which depicts the ongoing emergence of Dexter’s son Harrison.

The drama focuses on Dexter’s son Harrison, who survived his tumultuous reintroduction with his father and flees to New York City where he must wrestle with his own violent nature and whether, like his father, he too is compelled to kill. “New Blood” will explore the kinds of themes and scenarios seen in the original series on Showtime but through a new lens.

“Dexter: New Blood” became the most-watched series in Showtime history last year, averaging over 8 million viewers weekly across platforms. It sounds like Showtime wants to use that success as the launching point for a full-on “Dexter” universe. Stay tuned for more.

As you may have heard last week, Showtime is soon being merged with Paramount+ across linear and streaming, with the network being rebranded to “Paramount+ with Showtime.”
