Take note ICU is not just about physical beds. It requires specialized ICU nurses for critical care as well. When we reach 1000 ICU cases, it will cannibalize around 1/3 of the general ward resources. That's when **** goes through the roof. You will start seeing triage and emergency room doctors have to choose who to save.

So what are the MIW smoking? Keep telling us got enough beds, but they forgot, got enough staff or not?

But even though only a small fraction of people may fall very ill, ICU numbers can grow very quickly when it is applied to a "large and exponentially rising base of infected persons", Mr Wong noted.

Given that a sick person may require intensive care for more than two weeks, a spike in demand for ICU care can quickly become problematic. Singapore currently has about 100 ICU beds for Covid-19 patients, although it can increase this to nearly 300 beds at short notice.

Yeah I remember I heard about the 1000 ICU bed when they were rationalizing about endemic living and only turn back measures if hit 300 ICU patients.

Now become 100?! So means 30 ICU bed filled must go lockdown already right? If so we are dangerously close to 30 already.

generally 1 horsepeter got split into medical and surgical ICUs

typically, is around 2 wards, with 25 beds per ward

if each ward is 50 beds minus all those who come in for other issues, u go and multiply how many actual beds we have loh :frown:

Ok I think there's no mistake after reading the previous news.

He noted that although "only a small handful" of ICU beds are now occupied by COVID-19 patients, authorities have already opened up close to 70 beds, which is double the number from two weeks ago.

Singapore currently has about 100 ICU beds for Covid-19 patients, although it can increase this to nearly 300 beds at short notice.

TLDR:
  • 2 months ago they opened up 70 beds (means prepare the beds, resources and staffing).
  • Now they opened up 100 beds (+30).
  • Next, they are ready to open up to 300 at short notice
  • Eventually, 1000 beds are still ready but not at short notice
  • They are doing this progressively as ICU numbers inch up overtime
