While on an MRT train, Makesvaran Visuranatham pestered a woman with questions before following her in the train carriage and exposing his genitals to her twice.
Upon leaving the train and getting on an escalator, he made an obscene gesture while looking at her, prompting her to shout and hold onto his shirt to prevent him from running away.
He was subsequently arrested.
On Monday (April 11), Makesvaran, a Malaysian, was sentenced to four weeks’ jail and a fine of S$500 after pleading guilty earlier this year to using criminal force on the woman, obtaining sexual gratification by exposing his genitals, and insulting her modesty.
One other similar charge was taken into consideration for sentencing.
The 30-year-old woman, also a Malaysian, cannot be named due to a court order to protect her identity.
The court heard that she boarded the train at Raffles Place MRT Station on May 2 last year around 7.50am, after finishing work.
She sat in a corner seat while Makesvaran sat to her left. She felt him nudge her waist with his elbow but she ignored him, thinking it was accidental.
A few seconds later, she felt him touching the area between her armpit and her waist with his right elbow. He then showed her his mobile phone, asking her if she knew a place and saying he was late for work after falling asleep on the train.
Soon, she felt his right elbow touch her upper body again. He then asked how many more stations there were till they got to Jurong East station.
She responded that there were seven more stations, before getting up and walking towards another cabin near the head of the train.
When she sat, Makesvaran tailed her and sat beside her again.
He asked where she was alighting and how many more stops there were to Jurong East station. She responded and then walked away.
While performing an obscene act, Makesvaran then exposed his genitals to the victim.
She walked away towards the train doors but he stood up and positioned himself at a glass panel next to her, before flashing himself again while looking at her.
When the train got to Jurong East station, Makesvaran alighted before the victim did.
As they got onto the escalator heading to the floor below, Makesvaran was two steps in front of her. He then turned to face her, placed his hand on his crotch area and rubbed his genitals over his clothes while continuing to look at her.
She shouted at him and held onto his shirt to prevent him from fleeing. The station master then contacted the police for assistance and Makesvaran was arrested.
Those convicted of obtaining sexual gratification by exposing their genitals can be jailed for up to a year or fined, or punished with both.
