Manchester United ended their interest in Bruno Fernandes because of concerns the midfielder loses possession too much, sources have told ESPN FC.

United looked at Fernandes as a potential option to boost their midfield after an impressive season that saw the Portugal international score 31 goals for Sporting Lisbon.

However, the club's recruitment team voiced concerns about the 24-year-old's passing statistics -- highlighting that he gives the ball away too much -- before deciding he did not fit in with the possession-based style of football favoured by Solskjaer.

Sources have told ESPN FC that United also became frustrated at the amount of speculation in Portugal about a possible move for Fernandes.

Privately, Old Trafford chiefs believed Sporting tried to drive up the price by over-stating interest from the Premier League. Tottenham and Liverpool were also linked with moves.

United did not replace Marouane Fellaini or Ander Herrera during the summer transfer window and Solskjaer is set to make signing a new midfielder his priority next summer.

Sean Longstaff remains a target despite United being put off by Newcastle's £50 million valuation.

The 21-year-old is set to open talks over a new contract to extend his stay at St James' Park.

Meanwhile, sources have told ESPN FC that the club are ready to open contract talks with Victor Lindelof.

The 25-year-old defender has two years and a year's option left on his deal but is set to be rewarded with a new contract for establishing himself as one of Solskjaer's first-choice centre-backs.

Lindelof struggled in his first year at Old Trafford following a £31m move from Benfica in 2017 but was one of the stand-out players last season, making 40 appearances in all competitions.

Why Harry Maguire snubbed mammoth Man City offer and joined Man Utd in record transfer

And the Daily Star report Pep Guardiola’s side were prepared to pay Maguire a staggering £278,000-a-week.

The former Foxes defender is said to have held extensive talks with Etihad chiefs over a potential move to the blue side of Manchester.

But the report goes on to suggest Maguire was never truly invested in moving to City.

That’s because Maguire always had his heart set on joining United and when it came down to it, there was only one team he wanted to join.

Once the transfer was confirmed, Maguire’s mum made it clear why it was such an easy choice to move to Old Trafford.

Posting on Twitter, Zoe Maguire wrote: “When your son dreams of playing for Man Utd as a little boy and you wake up one morning and it’s happening #dreamscancometrue so proud of u”

Alongside the emotional post was a picture of a young Maguire as well as a current photo of the centre-back in the United kit.

Because he is a Man Utd fan & will only join Man Utd. In fact all 3 signings this season only wanted to sign & play at Man Utd. Solskjaer's future signings will be players who want to join & play at Man Utd.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is about to find out how much Manchester United have improved

But again, it is early days and it will be a few weeks before we find out just how much Solskjaer has improved this group of players in the off-season.

How United do in their next six Premier League fixtures will be a good barometer of how far they have come over the summer. United have games away to Wolves, Southampton and West Ham coming up as well as home fixtures against Crystal Palace, Leicester and Arsenal.

United's record from the same matches last season read: one win, three draws, two losses.

The sole victory came against Leicester on the opening day of the campaign, a forgettable game decided by a fortuitous Luke Shaw winner, while Southampton, Palace and Arsenal all held United to draws.

The less said about the losses to Wolves and West Ham, the better.

Lost 13 points against these 6 clubs last season. If can beat all these 6 clubs in the next 6 games, Man Utd may have a chance to compete for the title this season. Wolves was Man Utd nemesis last season.

Ole on Alexis:

“Alexis is such a professional and he comes in working every single day really hard. He wants to be a part of this and it's these stories he's again that he's been put in the reserves, of course he hasn't.“

“He's a part of our squad and a very, very good player.”
