Fred’s a regular with Brazil and has all the traits that should make him a key midfielder within this United squad. In previous systems though, he’s not always been able to show that, but on Tuesday night guided by Carrick he did.
His role on the night was slightly different to what we’ve seen in the past. Whilst United operated in something like a 4-3-3 with the ball, without it looked more like a 4-4-2. Both Donny van de Beek and Jadon Sancho would tuck into midfield alongside McTominay, whilst
Fred would push out wide to the left.
In that position, he was tasked with covering Cristiano Ronaldo who sometimes can be susceptible to being bypassed too easily, and Alex Telles who was the main provider of the team’s width on that side.
Throughout the evening, both in that wider position or when coming into more central areas, Fred was unrelenting in harrying and closing down runners, making key interceptions at crucial moments.
Beyond the advantages of this from a defensive standpoint, his ability to read the play and force mistakes proved decisive in both goals on the night.
The first goal came as a result of Fred’s excellent anticipation, setting off quickly to force the turnover deep inside the Villarreal half which was expertly finished by Ronaldo.
Then later in the second half and despite the tiring work already put in by the midfielder, Fred’s suffocating pressure saw him nick the ball again, evade a challenge to win it back and then lay it off to kickstart a move that was eventually finished by Sancho.
The proficiency of Fred’s performance on the night was captured by the fact that he made more defensive pressures than any other player in the United team (22).
Of course, it wasn’t just what he did without the ball, but also with it that impressed. Rarely did he put any teammates under pressure, or forfeit possession cheaply - he finished the match with 47 of his 52 passes finding their intended target.
United fans will be hoping that Tuesday was a glimpse into how Fred could become one of the club’s most important players in this imminent new era that’s set to begin.
In Michael Carrick's first game in charge of Man Utd as caretaker manager vs Villarreal, Fred was one of United's standout performers.
