MM Lee admits that all grassroots organizations are part of PAP

In an uncharacteristic Freudian slip, Singapore’s octogenarian leader Minister Mentor Lee Kuan Yew finally confirmed the suspicions of many Singaporeans – that all grassroots organizations are part of the PAP and not “non-partisan” as they are supposed to be.

Dispensing his usual “pearls of wisdom” on China yesterday during a dialogue, Lee said that the Chinese have been studying Singapore for several years, sending many teams of officials, at different levels of government, to attend courses at, for example, the National University of Singapore, the Nanyang Technological University, and the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy.

To illustrate one lesson the Chinese learnt, he said:

“They discover that the People’s Action Party (PAP) has only a small office in Bedok. But everywhere they go, they see the PAP – in the RCs (residents’ committees), CCCs (citizens’ consultative committees), and the CCs (community clubs).”

[Source: Straits Times, 30 December 2009]

Over 85 per cent of Singapore’s population lives in public housing estates built by HDB. Every estate is subdivided into various zones, each with its own RC.

A RC usually comprises of residents living within the zone and serve to promote interaction between Singaporeans by organizing events such as “block parties” at the void decks of HDB flats.

Community Clubs cater to residents of the entire estate and offers a broader range of activities such as yoga classes, language courses and cooking classes.

All grassroots organizations in Singapore are under the purview of the People’s Association, a statutory board set up on 1 July 1960 “to promote racial harmony and social cohesion.” Its Chairman is none other than the Prime Minister himself who is also the Secretary-General of the PAP.

Though grassroots organizations are non-political organizations, they are often involved in “pseudo-political” activities which serve the partisan interests of the PAP.

The premises of RCs are used for the weekly “Meet-the-People” sessions of PAP MPs. Dialogue sessions with ministers are often held in the halls of Community Clubs.

To further complicate matters, the Chairpersons of RCs are sometimes PAP members who sit on many boards. A PAP branch secretary may be the Vice Chairman of a Community Club Management Committee and a RC Chairman at the same time.

As an example, a YPAP member and moderator of the YPAP Facebook Network Mr Fong Yoong Keong, is the Vice Chairman of Eunos Community Club Management Committee and Assistant Secretary of Eunos Zone “3″ RC at the same time.

The RCs and CCs give the PAP a powerful grassroots machinery on the ground which enables it to steamroll over the opposition election after election.

Since the PA is a statutory board funded entirely by taxpayers’ monies, Singaporeans have been unwittingly “sponsoring” the PAP’s partisan activities over the last four decades.

In fact, the PAP is found not only in grassroots organizations, but everywhere in Singapore as well from the mainstream media, trade unions, police, Internal Security Department, state-linked companies and what not – you name it, you have it!

Lee once boasted unashamedly about the PAP’s complete dominance in Singapore during an interview with its mouthpiece Petir in 1982:

“I make no apologies that the PAP is the (Singapore) Government and the Government is the PAP.”

No wonder the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) is so interested to learn from Singapore.

I guess he is just tip of the iceberg. Grassroots has always been a place of uncontrolled shady business deals among the members.

He might have been just a sacrificial lamb to cover the tracks of someone more powerful.

It is inevitable that in any organization which do not have real transparency, there will always be so sort of "shady" deals being done. Especially when you consider that they are links to the government.

Yep, many contractors and New Citizens are RC members for obvious reasons.

Loh Meng Hai, the grassroots leader of Holland-Bukit Timah GRC who hanged himself on Monday was supposed to go to CPIB for questioning on the same day.

Mr Loh reportedly hanged himself in the storeroom of his house after a quarrel with fellow committee members of Bukit Timah Beauty World Merchant Association.

According to committee members interviewed by Chinese daily Lianhe Wanbao, Mr Loh was questioned by a lawyer present at its AGM on seven irregularities in its accounts including the selection process of a tender and the amount of commission given to the association.

Mr Loh has been an active grassroots leader in Holland-Bukit Timah GRC for the last 40 years. He was awarded PBM in 2002 and BBM in 2007.

His untimely death shocked many in the community who had worked together with him. Neither his family nor his close associates are aware of him currently being under investigation by CPIB.

Mr Loh is also the treasurer of Bukit Timah CCMC. A wreath from Mrs Yu-Foo Yee Shoon, Minister of State, Ministry of Community Development, Youth and Sports and MP for Holland-Bukit Timah GRC was noticed at his wake.

PA launches official investigation into business dealings of YPAP member Sear Hock Rong

Written by Our Correspondent

The People’s Association (PA) has launched an official investigation into the business dealings of YPAP members Mr Sear Hock Rong and Mr Fong Yoong Keong with Eunos grassroots organizations following an email complaint lodged by Mr Alex Tan last week. (read article here)

Mr Sear and Mr Fong are both grassroots leaders in Eunos. Mr Sear is the Chairman of the Eunos Community Club Youth Executive Committee while Mr Fong is the Assistant Secretary of Eunos Zone “3″ Resident Committee.

All grassroots organizations in Singapore are under the purview of the People’s Association, a statutory board. In a recent speech, MM Lee Kuan Yew insinuated that these organizations are “part” of the PAP.

Mr Sear and Mr Fong currently run an education service company. Though it was set up only in July last year, it counts many Eunos grassroots organizations as its clients including Eunos Zone “3″ RC.

Netizens have been questioning Mr Sear if there are any conflicts of interest between his business and grassroots work.

The Temasek Review compiled a series of 10 questions for Mr Sear to answer based on the PA’s operating guidelines for acquisition of services from external vendors.

Among the key questions are whether if there were quotations submitted by other companies and if Mr Sear or Mr Fong sit on the Constituency Tender Committee in charge of awarding tenders to external vendors for services provided to non-CC based grassroots organizations.

Mr Sear posted a comment on our site saying that he “does not have to explain anything to anybody” and challenged netizens to lodge a report against him to the authorities.

Mr Alex Tan, who had earlier challenged the YPAP to an open debate at Speaker’s Corner obliged by sending an email questioning Mr Sear and Mr Fong’s business dealings with Eunos grassroots organizations to several government agencies such as the PA, CPIB and AGC as well as to all the MPs in parliament.

In a short reply to Alex, Ms Adlina Jaffar, the Head of the PA’s Corporate Communications Division wrote:

“Dear Alex

Please refer to your e-mail on Mr Sear Hock Rong and Mr Fong Yoong Kheong’s
business involvement with Eunos grassroots organisations. The matter is
being investigated.

Thank you for your feedback.”

[Source: Alex's blog]

There were no immediate comment from either Mr Sear or Mr Fong, both of whom are moderators of the YPAP Facebook.

Since the controversy first erupted, they had been relying on fellow comrades Mr Edgar Khieu and Mr Genesis Shen to defray criticisms from netizens.

Mr Edgar Khieu had earlier said that he did not see any “problem” with Mr Sear’s business involvement in the grassroots organizations as any potential conflict of interest is “well managed”.

In the meantime, Alex received a threat from an anonymous poster on his blog yesterday warning him to stop “harassing” YPAP members. It also claimed to have made a “report” against Alex and urged him to “stop before it is too late”.

It is not uncommon to see grassroots leaders who are concomitantly PAP members being involved in business dealings directly with the grassroots organizations they are serving in.

Though there may be nothing wrong technically in such practices, questions must be raised on whether they enjoy an unfair advantage over others because of their connections with the PAP.

Grassroots organizations are supposed to be non-partisan in nature to promote harmony between the different races in Singapore.

With so many PAP members serving as grassroots leaders at the same time, they risk becoming the grassroots support bases of the PAP instead.

Open letter to PA’s CEO Mr Tan Boon Huat on MM Lee’s remarks that all grassroots organizations are part of the PAP

Mr Tan Boon Huat
Chief Executive Officer
People’s Association

Dear Mr Tan,

RE: MM LEE’S REMARKS ON GRASSROOTS ORGANIZATIONS BEING PART OF PAP

We refer to the following remarks made by the Minister Mentor Lee Kuan Yew which were published in the Straits Times on 30 December 2009:

“They discover that the People’s Action Party (PAP) has only a small office in Bedok.

But everywhere they go, they see the PAP – in the RCs (residents’ committees), CCCs (citizens’ consultative committees), and the CCs (community clubs).”

[Source: Straits Times, 30 December 2009]

MM Lee was commenting on the Chinese officials who have been sent to Singapore to study how he ran his country.

The above statement seems to imply that the PAP is in control of all the grassroots organizations in Singapore – the RCs, CCCs and CCs.

According to information posted on its website, the People’s Association (PA) was established as a statutory board on 1 July 1960 to promote racial harmony and social cohesion.

Nowhere was it mentioned that the PA is somewhat involved with the PAP, a political party.

As the PA is supposedly a non-partisan and apolitical organization, MM Lee’s words are befuddling.

Since it is impossible to get MM Lee to clarify his statement, we have to trouble you to clarify the following questions:

1. Are the RCs, CCCs and CCs open to all Singaporeans or only PAP members?

2. Are they funded by taxpayers’ monies or the PAP itself?

3. Is there an unwritten rule within the PA that most, if not all heads of these grassroots organizations should be card-carrying members of the PAP?

4. Are personnel from grassroots organizations mobilized for PAP events such as its ministerial meetings with residents?

5. Are they also roped in to help the PAP’s campaign in the community during the general elections?

6. Are volunteers spending their time to help the community or to promote the PAP to the community?

We noticed that the PA’s board of directors consist of a few ministers such as Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong and Minister in the Prime Minister’s Office Mr Lim Boon Heng.

Is it therefore correct to say that the People’s Association is controlled by the PAP and cannot be trusted to discharge its manifold duties impartially to all Singaporeans without prejudice to the PAP’s own partisan interest?

It is pertinent that you answer the six questions we pose to you so that Singapore taxpayers will have a better idea where their contributions to the PA are going to.

At the same time, new volunteers should be aware of what they are in for when they sign up to join a grassroots organization.

Are they really serving the community or end up providing free manpower to the PAP unwittingly?

With warm regards,

The Temasek Review Team

Alex Tan lodges official complaint against YPAP member Sear Hock Rong to CPIB and AGC

The ongoing spate between YPAP and 3in1kopitiam forum took a turn for the worse when a forumer from the latter, “interpretsg” aka Alex Tan lodged an official complaint against YPAP members Sear Hock Rong and Fong Yoong Keong to the relevant authorities.

Alex had been engaged in a war of words with YPAP members on its Facebook before he was banned ostensibly on the grounds of “indulging in vulgarities and name-calling”.

The news even made the headlines when the Straits Times published an article on one YPAP member Sear Hock Rong taunting Alex about his previous detention in National Service for “general disobedience”.

Mr Sear’s callous behavior brought widespread condemnation from netizens and that’s when his business dealings with Eunos grassroots organizations were exposed.

Both Mr Sear and his business partner Mr Fong are YPAP members and grassroots leaders in Eunos. They set up a a company to provide “education services” on 15 July 2009 according to ACRA.

Within half a year, it managed to secure 24 clients, nearly a third of which are grassroots organizations based in Eunos. Netizens have been questioning Mr Sear and Mr Fong if there are any conflicts of interest in their business and grassroots work.

Last week, the Temasek Review posed 10 questions to Mr Sear based on the People’s Association’s operating guidelines for acquisition of services from exxternal vendors.

Mr Sear posted a comment on our site saying that he does not feel he needs to “explain anything to anybody” and challenged those who “question his integrity” to lodge a report against him to the relevant authorities which was gamely taken up by Alex.

In his email addressed to the People’s Association, Prime Minister Office, Attorney-General Chambers, CPIB, Mr Zainal Abidin, the advisor for Eunos grassroots organizations as well as all 90 MPs and NMPs, Alex claimed that he is writing it “as a concerned Singaporean tax-payer to enquire on a recent case of grassroot leaders who profited from a list of clients they have relations with.”

Alex listed the positions held by Mr Sear and Mr Fong in Eunos grassroots organizations as well as their companies’ clients and questioned if there is are any conflict of interests:

“I would like to ask if there is any conflict of interests between the 2 Eunos grassroot leaders and the Eunos RCs they are serving in? especially so for Mr Fong, Assistant Secretary of Eunos Zone ‘3′ RC, whose business profited from Eunos Zone 3 RC?”

He urged the authorities to “clarify and dispel any notion of doubt on this Eunos grassroot matters.” and stressed that he “will pursue this matter on the behalf of all Singaporeans until a satisfactory reply is accepted by Singaporeans.”

It remains to be seen whether anybody will give an official reply to Alex and the online community.

“Report” made against Alex Tan for “harassing” YPAP and “intimidating” PAP MP

A day after a complaint was lodged against The Temasek Review for posting “sensitive personal” information of individuals on our site, another “report” was filed against Mr Alex Tan who started the “Vote PAP out” Facebook which attracted more than 1,000 members within a week.

Alex had been been posting actively on the YPAP Facebook for the last few months before he was banned ostensibly on the grounds of indulging in “vulgarities and name-callings”.

He made the headlines last month by embarassing two PAP MPs with sensitive and difficult questions at a YPAP Forum. Since then, he had continued his criticisms of the PAP on his personal blog and Facebook.

A few days ago, Alex emailed a letter to several government agencies and all the MPs in parliament asking them to clarify if there are any conflict of interest between the business deals of YPAP member Sear Hock Rong and his grassroots volunteer work in Eunos.

Mr Sear runs a company providing education services with another YPAP member Fong Yoong Keong and it counts many grassroots organizations in Eunos as its clients.

Alex posted a comment on the “Vote PAP out” Facebook that he had “an anonymous commentator saying it made a police report of me harrassing YPAP and intimidating Sam Tan.”:

alexpolice.jpg

[Source: "Vote PAP out" Facebook]

We did a quick check on Alex’s blog and found the following comment posted on 4 January at 1.34am:

“You better stop your harassment against YPAP members. A report has been made against you for intimidating PAP MP Mr Sam Tan. Stop your nonsense now before it is too late.”

It is not known what Alex did exactly to “intimidate” Mr Sam Tan. In all likelihoods, the comment is probably another scare-tactic commonly employed by the PAP to silence its critics and detractors.

Whether it is true or otherwise, Alex appears to be unfazed by the veiled threat from his reply:

“My apologies that YPAP is losing face and Sam Tan feels intimidated. What is too late? the pandora box has opened, now face the consequences.”

In another interesting development, YPAP member Mr Eric How who sparked an outcry in cyberspace for his callous remarks on netizens had removed all his personal information from his Facebook.

However, some netizens manage to copy the information posted about his C.V. and company which has been circulating throughout the major internet forums in Singapore.

Has the YPAP declared war on Singapore netizens? From the looks of it, it does appear that some of its members are behind the latest spates of complaints against some socio-political blogs and forums with the intention to shut them down.

After all, Mr Eric How did admit that he has been “monitoring” the postings of 3in1kopitiam to ensure that they do not “infringe on copyright materials”.

While YPAP members have whipped up a storm in cyberspace with their childish antics, its Chairman Teo Ser Luck had maintained a dignified silence.

It is not known if Mr Teo is aware of the words and actions of his juniors such as Sear Hock Rong, Eric How and Edgar Kieu which has done irreparable damage to the image of YPAP in the eyes of the online community in Singapore.

Alex Tan thanked Lianhe Wanbao for “free” advertisement for his blog

Despite being portrayed unfairly as a brash and uncouth young punk by the state media Lianhe Wanbao, Alex Tan appeared to be unfazed by the negative publicity and even thanked the “141th media” for the “free advertisment” in his latest blog posting (read article here)

Alex first shot into fame a month ago when he publicly embarrassed two PAP MPs with difficult and sensitive questions at a YPAP forum which made the headlines in The Straits Times.

He was subsequently banned from posting on YPAP Facebook on the grounds of “indulging in name-callings and vulgarities”.

Alex claimed that it was a YPAP member Sear Hock Rong who started the flame war first by mocking him for his past detention record during National Service for a minor offence.

3in1kopitiam forumers found out that Mr Sear’s company has business dealings with Eunos grassroots organizations where he is serving in which sparked an outcry in cyberspace on possible conflicts of interest.

Mr Sear declined to clarify matters and challenged netizens to lodge a report against him to the authorities which Alex duly obliged by writing in to several government agencies including the PA, AGC and CPIB.

The People Association has replied to Alex that it will be conducting an investigation into the matter.

Stunned by the negative publicity arising from the fiasco in cyberspace, Lianhe Wanbao published an article yesterday in a lame attempt to exonerate the PAP from any blame by portraying Alex as a “trouble-maker” with an axe to grind with Mr Sear.

There are glaring factual inconsistencies and loopholes in the article which omitted important facts such as Mr Sear’s open call to netizens to report him to the relevant authorities and his endless taunting of Alex on the YPAP Facebook.

The journalist did not even bother to contact Alex at all to hear his side of the story or the PAP MPs from Eunos and instead interviewed two PAP MPs from other constituencies to defend Mr Sear on the grounds that there are no rules forbidding grassroots leaders from doing business with the grassroots organizations they are serving in.

However, the article did publish a snapshot of Alex’s blog “Utopia8787″ without the URL which Alex exploited to publicize his “Vote PAP out” Facebook which has since garnered nearly 2,000 members within two weeks, more than twice the membership of the YPAP Facebook.

It turns out that the Lianhe Wanbao article has unwittingly helped Alex promote his political cause. In the posting, he continues his exhortations to Singaporeans to vote out the PAP:

“This year is 2010. The General Elections will be held this year. Show your protest vote against the PAP simply by voting for the Opposition Parties or by spoiling your votes…….

Hurry. before Temasek Holdings and GIC lose more billions in our kitty fund and Singaporeans ended up paying for their gambles……

or PAP raise their Ministerial Salaries by another Million because they are oh-so-talented and rare……….

or PAP raise another 2% GST and tell you it is to help the poor…….

or Singaporeans will have their CPF withdrawal date deferred later because “new statistics” shows Singaporeans are living forever……

or Singaporean males will have to serve more National Service Reservist Training, while the PRs and Foreigners can’t serve because “it is economically unwise for them to do so”….. Vote for Change, vote the PAP out.”

Instead of employing the usual “slash and burn” tactics to defame, discredit and demolish their critics, the PAP should seriously reflect on why Alex is so vehemently against them and judging from the overwhelming response from young Singaporeans to his “Vote PAP out” Facebook, he is definitely not alone.

Demolishing the lies in Lianhe Wanbao article to smear the character of young PAP critic Alex Tan

OPINION

For all his follies, MM Lee Kuan Yew is probably right in his frank acknowledgement that Singapore’s bilingual policy has been an abject failure as more than amply demonstrated by the English comprehension skills of Lianhe Wanbao journalist Mr Xu Xiangyu.

As SPH has not yet resorted to employing PRCs like most other industries in Singapore, we presumed that Mr Xu is a Singaporean who has gone through the Singapore education system like most of us.

That he can completely twist and distort the truth and conjure a fairy tale out of nothing to suit the interest of his political masters is a damning indictment either of Singapore education or the training he received as a journalist here.

In an article published on page 5 of Lianhe Wanbao on 8 January 2010, Mr Xu tried desperately hard to exonerate the PAP from any blame in the ongoing saga involving YPAP members Sear Hock Rong and Fong Yoong Keong’s business dealings with Eunos grassroots organizations and to assassinate the character of the messenger Alex Tan who made the complaint to various key government agencies such as PA, CPIB and AGC.

One basic tenet of journalism is to always provide accounts from both opposing sides to allow readers to judge the matter for themselves. Mr Xu has contacted the two YPAP members to provide their side of the story, but not Alex at all.

Furthermore, instead of contacting the MPs in Eunos grassroots organizations such as Mr Zainal Abidin to solicit their views on the matter, he chose to interview two MPs in other constituencies which are not implicated in the controversy in the first place.

(Notice that the Chinese papers have been giving Lee Bee Wah frequent interviews to repair her battered image in the eyes of Singaporeans ahead of the next GE which will be another story for another day)

Lastly, he made the most juvenile mistake of mis-spelling Alex’s name. The second Chinese character of his name should be “zhi” for “intelligence” (智) and not “zhi” for ambition (志).

Now let us dissect Mr Xu’s forgettable article and debunk its inherent factual inaccuracies and outright lies one by one:

wanbaoalexsmear.jpg

LIE #1: Alex Tan bears a grudge against Sear Hock Rong for a long time

FACT: Alex did not even know Hock Rong in real life and so how can he possibly bear a “grudge” against him and somemore for a “long time”.

In fact when Hock Rong kept taunting Alex about his past detention in National Service, Alex did not even bother to rebuke him at all.

LIE #2: Alex Tan was banned from YPAP Facebook for hurling vulgarities at its members

FACT: YPAP banned Alex Tan from its Facebook because its members are unable to handle the embarrassing and sensitive questions posed by Alex on its wall and none of them are able to defeat him in a debate.

Though Alex has been rather vocal, sharp and unforgiving in his criticisms of the PAP, there was not once in which he used foul or abusive language against the YPAP members.

It was Hock Rong and the YPAP members who started flaming Alex in a lame attempt to discredit him by bringing up his DB record during NS.

Hock Rong kept addressing Alex sarcastically as “Alex Tan Zhixiong who was charged with ‘general disobedience’, but Alex simply ignored him and chose to focus on the issues.

In short, it was the YPAP who resorted to dirty underhanded tactics commonly employed by PAP leaders to smear the character of their opponents.

Some of the exchanges between Alex and YPAP members are still available on YPAP Facebook.

Unless Mr Xu does not understand English, how can he possibly not be aware of the truth?

LIE #3: It was Alex who revealed his DB record on his own blog first

FACT: Alex has already clarified on his blog that it was Hock Rong and not him who first revealed his DB record on the YPAP Facebook.

It was only after the Hock Rong used that to attack Alex repeatedly that Alex made the comment that he is unfazed by the punishment as he felt he has done nothing wrong.

Till today, Hock Rong still hasn’t explained how he obtained this confidential information about Alex and whether he has contravened the Official Secrets Act by doing so.

LIE #4: Alex made the complaint about Hock Rong out of personal animosity

It was not Alex who exposed Hock Rong’s business dealings with Eunos grassroots organizations, but 3in1kopitiam forumers and it was its moderator Kojakbt who first wrote an email to Eunos MP Zainal Abidin to feedback on the matter.

The fiasco sparked a massive outcry in cyberspace with many netizens questioning if there are conflicts of inerest between Hock Rong’s company doing business with the grassroots organizations in which he is serving in.

We have provided Hock Rong ample opportunities to clarify himself on our site, but he had refused to do so.

It was he who challenged netizens to lodge a complaint against him and this crucial fact was omitted from Mr Xu’s article.

Below is a comment posted by Alex on our site:

“I made the second complain because I received many feedbacks by the internet community that the establishment will probably ignored Kojakbt, who posted the first complain as an internet moniker.

I merely proved to the Government I meant business by laying down my personal particulars, 5 days later on 1 Jan 2010.

Alex Tan Zhixiang”

The entire purpose of Mr Xu’s article is to exonerate the PAP from any blame in the controversy and to cast aspersions on the character of Alex by portraying him as some petty, malicious and vindictive hooligan whose words cannot be trusted.

Mr Xu could have contacted Ms Adlina Jaffar, the Head of the PA’s Corporate Communications Division who replied to Alex, Mr Tan Boon Huat, PA’s CEO or the MPs in Eunos to solicit their views on the matter.

He can even do some background research on his own to find out the number of grassroots leaders who have direct business dealings with the grassroots organizations they are serving in and write an article on it.

It is absolutely deplorable, disgusting and demeaning that the PAP has to resort to using the state media to fix a young man who is merely expressing the views shared by the majority of netizens and is of no political threat to them.

While we are hiding behind the cloak of anonymity, Alex has taken the brunt of the PAP’s vicious attack on our behalf. Are we going to stand by idly and allow Alex’s name to be smeared again and again by the PAP’s mouthpiece?

This unwarranted attack on Alex is an attack on each and everyone of us who have voiced out against some unethical, unfair and dubious practices within the grassroots organizations which are after all part of the PAP, as admitted by MM Lee himself lately.

Let us stand in solidarity together with Alex and show our support for him by spreading the truth far and wide to every corner in Singapore blogosphere to make sure that all netizens know that Alex has been character assassinated by the PAP for daring to question their authority.

With due respect to SPH journalists, we do know of the limitations you face in the course of your work, but such an unfair, lop-sided and inaccurate article from Mr Xu is really unacceptable.

We do not bear any personal grudges against Mr Xu or any other SPH journalist, but it is our duty to correct the wrongs and injustices perpetrated by you in order to serve the interests of your political masters.

We will be scrutinizing every article published by the state media closely and expose all the half-truths, myths and lies you are churning out.

In the end, it is your credibility and professionalism as a journalist which will take a beating.

As of now, our readership is on par with TODAY Online and is nearly 25 per cent that of The Straits Times’ digital edition.

You no longer have the monopoly on the “truth” and it will make you look extremely bad when we dissect, rebuke and announce your hogwash piece by piece to the world.

Think about it. Please don’t try any funny tricks to demolish Alex or any other critic of the PAP again. You are just giving us free bullets to shoot at you and helping us boost our readership in the process.

Complaint against YPAP member Sear Hock Rong reported in Lianhe Wanbao

Written by Our Correspondent

Chinese tabloid Lianhe Wanbao dedicated one entire page today on the complaint lodged by Mr Alex Tan against YPAP members Sear Hock Rong and Fong Yoong Keong on possible conflict of interests in their business dealings with Eunos grassroots organizations (page 5).

Both Mr Sear and Mr Fong are business partners in an education service provider company set up on 15 July 2009. They are also active grassroots leaders in Eunos grassroots organizations.

Mr Sear is the Chairman of Eunos Community Club Youth Executive Committee while Mr Fong is the Assistant Secretary of Eunos Zone “3″ Residents’ Committee.

In less than six months, Mr Sear’s company managed to get 24 clients, nearly a quarter of which are grassroots organizations in Eunos including Eunos Zone “3″ RC.

Since the stunning revelation was made online, netizens have been questioning Mr Sear if there are any conflict of interests between his company being involved in providing services to Eunos grassroots organizations where he served.

The Temasek Review compiled 10 questions based on the People Association’s standard operating procedures on acquisition of services from external vendors for Mr Sear Hock Rong to answer, but he declined on the grounds that we are not the “right platform” for him to do so and that he “does not need to explain anything to anybody.”

Mr Sear also challenged netizens who question his integrity to lodge a complaint against him which Mr Alex Tan duly obliged by sending an email complaint to key government agencies such as the PA, CPIB and AGC as well as all the MPs in Parliament.

The PA gave a written reply to Mr Alex Tan this week promising to investigate the matter.

Lianhe Wanbao was unable to contact Mr Sear while Mr Fong declined to be interviewed.

PAP MP Lee Bee Wah said there are no rules forbidding grassroots leaders from doing business with the grassroots organizations they are serving in.

Another MP Dr Lim Wee Kiat said there are no reasons not to engage the services of companies owned by grassroots leaders so long as they are not directly involved in the decision-making process of the tender.

The Temasek Review has earlier asked if Mr Sear or Mr Fong was sitting on the Constituency Tender Committee which is involved in the granting of tenders to external vendors, but have yet to receive a response from them.

The controversy is a PR disaster for the YPAP which is unable and unwilling to clarify matters and has to resort to the usual dirty underhanded tactics commonly employed by PAP leaders to fix its online critics.

Mr Sear and Mr Fong are moderators of the YPAP Facebook, an important role reserved only for trusted YPAP members who belong to the “inner circle.

Mr Sear appeared to enjoy a cozy relationship with PAP MP Zainal Abidin judging from the photos he took together with him during an overseas trip two years ago.

Last week, the Temasek Review, which has been reporting on the matter received a complaint to our hosting provider that we have leaked “sensitive personal” information of individuals on our site.

Two days later, an anonymous poster threatened Mr Alex Tan on his blog to “stop harassing YPAP members” and a “report” has been made against him for “intimidating PAP MP Sam Tan”.

As expected, Lianhe Wanbao tried to cast aspersions on Mr Alex Tan’s credibility by playing up his “feud” with both Mr Sear and Mr Fong to give the erroneous impression that he is taking “revenge” against them when it is a matter of intense public interest to all netizens.

Fortunately, with alternative news sites like The Temasek Review having a sufficiently high readership to counter its lies, it is unlikely that netizens will fall for its ruse to smear Alex’s character.

It is one big messy pool of shady business dealings and corruption in Grassroots.

The Republic, you don't know that all grassroot organisations are part of PAP? Unbelievable! What do you think they are part of what?

This is because one woman Minister (cannot remember the name) once answered this question in Parliament after GE 2006.

I also remembered PA(Peoples' Association) clarifying this question in ST Forum.

Both answers were all levels of grassroots (RC being the lowest) are non-partisan and apolitical as they owed it to the people to be so.

This is also grassroots are funded by public funds, not PAP funds.

It was a chest-thumping answer from both but I guess now she lied in Parliament and got away with it as usual and PA was telling crap to ST Forum.

I see...I thought all along that the grassroots organization is part of PAP. What about Town Council? Also part of PAP? HDB policy is belonged to LKY's idea?

Oh yes, I heard rumours indirectly from another source (SDP member) that LKY is suspected to be corrupted. I find it hard to believe! Can't be! If he is corrupted, then how come SG is peaceful and prosperful? :s11:

I guess all government-linked organisations will be controlled by PAP as long as they are linked and put their own people to control these organisations.

Corruption issue, ask CPIB but I guess thats also government linked. :s13:

But newspaper and Channel News Asia do come out with articles about corrupt civil servants being charged in court once in a while.

The only issue is that these days, it is getting more and more.

Maybe it is the fault of Singaporeans of not paying them enough.

Like PAP said many times, if we do not pay above average pay, people will be corrupted. This applies to all jobs.

Care to provide any links to show MP woman's claims? At least, in my opinion, LKY is at least honest to say that all grassroot organsiation is part of PAP?

Hmm...it is still incredible to me! If LKY is really corrupted, then God will judge him. Thank God that SG is not like Indonesia, Philippines that are corrupted and are full of suffering people who dun have shelter and jobless. SG helps to provide little welfare for poor citizens of SG, right?

Edited: CDC is part of PAP, right? They also provide any little welfare assistance to the poor citizens who really need it. Even provide job assistance and free food rations.

No more links as it was 4 years back but you can read this:

Singapore is less corrupt than the nations you mentioned but does not mean it is completely free from corruption.

MM Lee is not being honest as this was an open secret for decades.

YPAP member Sear Hock Rong wants TR to be accountable to the “majority” of Singaporeans who voted for the PAP

YPAP member Sear Hock Rong must be having sleepless nights of late over the complaint lodged by Alex Tan to the People’s Association on his business dealings with Eunos grassroots organizations.

At 4.41am in the morning, Mr Sear posted a comment on our site expressing his disappointment (as usual) against our article on the Lianhe Wanbao report.

Mr Sear asked us “how has the YPAP shown it was “unable” to clarify matters and “has to resort to the usual dirty underhanded tactics”?”

Netizens have been questioning Mr Sear and Mr Fong for the past two weeks if there are any conflicts of interest between their business and grassroots volunteer work, but both has declined to clarify the matter. Neither has the YPAP issue any official statement on their behalfs.

A YPAP member Eric How then tried to get posts unfavorable to the PAP deleted on the 3in1kopitiam delphi forum by repeatedly complaining to the delphi.

Coincidentally, an unknown person by the name of “Desmond Quek” called our hosts up last week to get our site shut down on flimsy grounds of revealing “sensitive” personal information of individuals on our site.

A day later, an anonymous poster threatened Alex to stop “harrassing” YPAP members and that a “report” made against him. If these tactics employed by the YPAP to shut its online critics up are not considered “dirty” and “underhanded”, then what else can they be?

Mr Sear also claimed that “many” Singaporeans are already very disappointed in our articles without substantiating it:

“As much as Temasek Review is supporting Mr Alex Tan in his campaign against the PAP, Temasek Review is also accountable to the majority of Singaporeans who voted for the PAP. Although Temasek Review needs to increase your readership to survive, it is important to write balanced and factual articles. Many Singaporeans are already very disappointed in your articles.”

The Temasek Review is accountable to the majority of netizens who are going to vote against the PAP in the next election and not PAP members and supporters who are well “served” by the mainstream media anyway.

We have received a barrage of criticisms recently from PAP supporters that our articles are biased against the PAP, but it is never our responsibility to make the PAP look good or care about its image in cyberspace.

Unlike some other blogs, we are already very generous and fair to the PAP by giving its MPs, members and supporters a platform to defend themselves and to express their views.

Mr Sear should be able to attest to the fact that we have been publishing his comments without moderation on our site.

We understand that PAP members loathe to give a site run by anonymous bloggers credibility by engaging it. However the reality is: you need us more than we need you.

The Temasek Review can afford to peeve off all the PAP members and supporters in cyberspace and our readership will still continue to grow. On the other hand, the PAP has no blogs with a sizable readership to compete with the cacophony of voices in blogosphere.

As for Mr Sear, we advised him to come straight to the point and answer the ten questions we have posed to him instead of beating around the bush.

PAP critic Alex Tan joins Singapore Democratic Alliance

A vocal online critic of the PAP, Mr Alex Tan Zhixiong, who embarrassed two PAP MPs with his sharp and sensitive questions at a YPAP Forum last month has joined the Singapore Democratic Alliance led by opposition veteran Mr Chiam See Tong.

Alex made the announcement on his “Vote PAP out” Facebook which has garnered more than 2,300 members within a month of its inception, more than the YPAP’s.

His announcement won the support of most netizens on the Facebook who cheered him for having the courage to walk his talk.

Jaslyn Go wrote:
“Congrats to SDA..I’m sure with your dynamic..you can attracts and draw more youngsters to come forward and effect the change Singapore needed
icon_smile.gif

Sylvester Lim added:

“Congratulations Alex. let’s work towards a united Opposition to Vote the PAP out.”

However, Mark Tan was a bit disappointed with his decision to join the opposition:

“Alex..so disappointed to hear you joining opposition party…was expecting you to be a entity of you own without any political affiliation to be a buffer between PAP and opposition groups.”

Alex said it was after much deliberation and careful thought that he decided to join the Singapore People’s Party, a component party of the SDA as it suits his interests to serve.

“I didn’t join SPP for Chiam See Tong or Desmond Lim. I join SPP because of Singaproeans. again, let me repeat my priority: Singaporeans first, Singapore second, Party third,” he added.

He was quick to emphasize that he did not join SPP to stand for election:

“It is up to SPP’s decision and i will take it in my stride if they think im not up to the job. I join SPP to contribute ideas to whoever is the MP, not to freeride SPP’s resources and stand for election. I will begin a series of Internet Campaigns with “Singaporeans” as the main theme.”

Haris Ibrahim suggests that Alex stand for elections in Eunos under Aljunied GRC where “Sear (Hock Rong) has given others the opening to attack PAP credibility and accountability.”

YPAP member Sear Hock Rong sparked an outcry in cyberspace when it was revealed that he has multiple business dealings with Eunos grassroots organizations where he is currently serving as a grassroots leader.

Despite numerous requests by netizens to clarify if there are any conflicts of interest, he had refused to do so and challenged them to lodge a report against him to the authorities which Alex did.

The state media subsequently tried to exonerate the PAP from any blame and resort to the usual character assassination to smear Alex’s character.

While it is brave of Alex to take a plunge into politics, he must be prepared of the “mud” that the PAP is dredging out to hurl at him.

The Singapore media is owned and controlled indirectly by the PAP and its coverage of local politics is blatantly biased against the opposition.

It is ranked a pathetic 133th position globally in terms of press freedom by respected international NGO Reporters Without Borders in 2009, below Rwanda, Burundi and Cambodia.
