help???

Can't decide whether i should give up appealing to the unis this year and wait for next years' admissions or try again. My appeals to FASS & NTU Socio got rejected. My RP is slightly below the cut off for FASS so that i understand but i clearly met socio's cut off so I'm pretty disappointed. Furthermore my admission to SMU Social Sci got rejected as well, still waiting for appeal results because i only sent in my appeal pretty late.

Actually I don't understand why SMU rejected me because my rp clearly meets its cut-off?? (major sian)

Anyway, what are the odds that sending another appeal email to ntu soci/smu social sci would increase my chances of being accepted?

Were you from poly or JC? Maybe your GP or O level English grade isnt good enough? And IGP is just a rough guideline.. meeting the rp doesnt guarantee admission

Yes, your IGP may meet the cut-off point for the course. BUT it does not guarantee you an offer/interview in the course you chose. It also depend on the number of people applying for the same course and whom has IGP higher than you and SMU assess holistically on your interview performance as well.

Sorry to burst your bubbles, if you have been rejected after sending your appeal and received the appeal results. High chance of resending another appeal will not help much. (Imagine other people also think of re-sending appeals when got rejected? They have to process this again. This don't sound logical to me and pretty redundant) If you are in NS right now, re apply again next year else you may want to take a gap year (if you are a girl) or apply other universities in Singapore.

chill yo just wanted to get more advices regarding applications and if there are actually still opportunities for me this year. Other than that i'm kind prepared to re-apply next year.

Like the other poster mentioned, meeting the cut-off may not be enough. It depends on supply and demand. The IGP follows last year's batch on intake, which has no correlation to this year's intake. It might be the case that the demand for the courses you applied for increased.

Some things that might affect your admissions:
1. Are you a local, PR or foreigner?
2. Did you fail (S and below) any A-level subjects?
3. Did you fail any O-level subjects?

GP and English are not the only things they look at. RP is also not the only thing they look at. You might have a very good ranking point but failed a H2 subject and they might still not admit you because you don't have a full cert. I know someone else on this forum that punched way above the IGP for soci but still got rejected this year.

Edit: I know of people who got good RP but failed their H1 Math or even O-level Math and was rejected from SS courses because of that. Its social science.

1. I'm local, have been since birth
2. Nop I didn't fail anything at Os and As..

I scored A & Bs for all my Art subjects and Ds for my Chem & Math..... but even so my O Levels em & am was A2?

And well... I participated in alot of school activities, took up several leadership roles and all those while i was in school... so i guess those didn't help me much in having a holistic background hahahaha.

Hmmm. Then I'm pretty much as lost as you. haha. The only reason would be that there are better scorers this year applying for the courses you applied for. Humanities is always getting more popular here while STEM courses are getting less popular. We will only know in December when the new IGP for this year comes out when we can see how much the IGP has risen.

If your grades are good, I'd recommend that you try again next year. This time, apply strategically, put courses that are clearly in reach (safely above IGP) as your first choice. It looks like an RP of 72.5 just matches both SMU SS and NTU Soci. This is cutting it too close in my opinion. You'd want to apply for courses like English, History or Chinese where you are above the IGP. In the meantime, work/intern or volunteer at some organisations first. Or even retake your A-levels to get a better grade set if you're confident.

Ahhh thanks. Was from Arts stream in JC so quite worried about the transition haha

I don't think so. :s22:
Don't think Biz students deal with very complicated math, amath should be sufficient bah :s22:

Sent from my potato using GAGT

AhPORK is right... until now I still don't get why NTU has to have that A math requirement for entry hahah.. I guess that's why they laxed the rules for the A math part already.. well... if you are concerned with the math component.. I think I would probably died by now.. because my math background is worse than yours :s13: no A math at O levels and from poly biz... so my math foundation is almost non-existent :s13:

modules that you may experience some difficulty for year 1 would be DSC1007 (Business Analytics) and BSP1005 (Econs). The econs one is really dependent on the module coordinator you get... for mine.. suay suay I got the math type of econs... but even then.. its mainly the 1st derivative type of stuff.. so its not too hard la. comparing with my NTU friend counterpart.. his econs in NTU last sem was so easy for him.. he said mainly concepts.. not much math and was so similar to poly econs that he got A :D

hahaha welcome to the club ;)

Hi, my rp is also 72.5 and I receive a call from smu for the interview and got in. Did u receive any call for the interview? its a bit weird that they didn't call u up for an interview, and you said u had a few leadership roles. I suggest you try to appeal to assist prof, and if it still fails take a gap year? Taking a gap year may not be a bad thing,if u don't want to go private u or unisim. I would say appealing to smu have a bigger chance than nus and ntu.

Hey I need an adivce regarding SMU appeal. My sister applied for economics but failed to get in. Her SAT is 1980 (not so good) and she graduated as 5/480+ students. Her CCAs are just same as mine and I got into SMU Biz this year. Anyway I'd like to know what courses are "less popular" so she can choose an appropriate course to appeal. Also, kindly give me and my sister advice about SMU appeal. Thanks in advance!

Sorry if i offend you with the following message i'm going to reply you. Isn't the course of study your sister should decide for her future than a course that is easy to get in and have no passion in the end?

There is no such thing as which course is less popular.. Your sister should decide what she want to do in the future. Don't study for the sake of studying. Know what you want.

If the community here is going to advise which course your sister should study. Your sister need to re-think whether she is fit to study in university as she rely on people to make decisions for her and no one can guarantee her "SUCCESS" in life.

What you say is totally agreeable. But in fact she actually studies for sake of studying. What is important to her is to get into a university. You may think this is a stupid attitude and idea but this is the reality. Thanks for a reply but if you are not going to give any useful advice to a very desperate applicant, please do not comment.

I would suppose the hard nut to crack is yourself. The poster gave one of the best advice you and your sister should ever get. If your sister just want a certificate, don't waste 3/4 years, just go somewhere and buy one. It's faster, less hassle and definitely works.

The reality is you are not in reality. What is important for her is to understand the reason to study and the target, so that what she will be doing in it will be productive and effective. At the end of the day, your sister will not be wasting away hard-earned precious money from your parents or your guardians sending their children to schools and achieving nothing in life.

Any substandard answer to answer your desperate question is as good as not answering. But rather you took a deaf ear against something giving your genuine answer to your problem and here you, in the public forum, request the poster not the comment with the answer does not suit your needs ?

You better think harder with your coconut brain (filled with water), if you have such high respect for asking something that is unknown to you right here, then prepared for any answer. If you already have some answers you think is more useful to you, that means you already knows the answer, then why bother to ask. Just go and figure thinks out yourself and move on destroy the future of your sibling.

And you are quite right on your perspective. It's indeed stupid and getting nowhere. If that's the case, I recommend you take the tuition fee, walk right into the casino and gamble it, you might have better outcomes.

Right now, you are asking your sister walk into something she has not set her heart into, with no commitment to succeed. So she will just torment herself for 3/4 years, in the end get bad grades, end up worse off than having 3/4 years of youth in the first place.

Density is at a new peak nowadays

I appreciate your long and offensve reply to enlighten me. You guys here in this forum are very smart and wise indeed. I cannot say anything 'cause you sound perfectly right. Congrats in proving that you are smarter and wiser than me.

Smartalex, I can assure you, winning you or outsmarting you, there is nothing big deal. We don't get an oscar prize tomorrow.

If you want to walk into the abyss, go ahead. We say our pieces to point out to you on the importance of education and the right attitude to MAKE IT WORK for you. You think we say all these so that we can be branded as HEROS in where ? Some silly cyberworld stored in the hard disk of a server ?

Use your brain and save your sister. She is your sister, not ours. Her success is in your understanding of our harsh words for you. If you want to act like we are just trying to prove anything, I hope you are right. Because if you are wrong, your sister future is the only thing at stake.

I don't have to say more seriously, but you sound like a very irresponsible brother and I feel sorry for your sister. Because your excessive pride allows yourself to fall deaf ears against genuine advices.
