For 4 pax, private car booking may make sense. Do you know of reliable vendor to book from and what's the typical price for the 2 routes (TC->SML and SML->Alishan) ?

As for HSR, I reckoned pass does not make sense for my itin but good that @Calkel confirmed.

Thanks, Andrew and Calkel.

Fb look for The Taichung Driver.

Experiencing the bus sounds good, but the consideration is Google map seems to suggest quickest route is by car.

It's my plan too to ask and book at the hotel, as an alternative.

Tw google map on public transport is not accurate. Try typing the location A to location B, you will get a more accurate result on google.

I have to add, hotels in keelung can be super over-sold and over priced. it is still better to stay in taipei, unless traveller is using keelung as a stopover to hua-dong region.

Over-sold ==> u dun get what u see. too much PS-ed. Its not that decent clean, unless u pay 200 pn for 3 bed room suit. Hotel breakfast in keelung is also quite over rated as they offer can food for breakfast. not uncommon but its included as part of the deal

Over rated you mean? Over sold means selling more than the inventory.
