IMHO.
I use external USB 3.0 HDD bay that support 3.5" HDDs.
The 3.5" 2TB HDD cost about $80-$100.
This setup is much faster than portable HDDs.
Of course will be slower than SSDs.

Is there a 4TB SSD drive available? Thinking of getting one as they are faster vs the normal drives. Also would Sim Lim be the best place to buy them or is there a cheaper place to get one?

Now 4TB should be available.
Not sure about the pricing.
For myself, if I want warranty, i will go Sim Lim.
If not, I look for them on Amazon.

Buy overseas cons is warranty, if the drive stop working after
you accidentally drop it than it's good as buying a new one.
Best way to prolong portable HDD is to shutdown the PC
before unplugging.

Windows eject does not cut the power so the HDD is still spinning
and if you plug it when it is still spinning the HDD will spoil in the long run.

Warranty is for manufacture or workmanship related defects.
Good for the user if can claim for user caused mishandling and negligence.

In my experience, Windows eject cuts power to the HDD unless the the Windows is not working properly as it should.

Ways to prolong portable HDDs
a) do use it on a hard surface
b) do use it right side up
c) do let the HDD rest for a few seconds after Windows eject before disconnecting
d) do ensure the area is a vibration free as possible
