claw machine and mystery boxes also have entertainment "value". you exchange money for the thrill - either you get something great, good, or nope. you get a moment of fun with the money. the players know this very well. addicted to those? people can also be addicted to "investing" and trading
IF you are using claw machines or mystery boxes for entertainment purposes only, i would say you are not gambling. But only you know yourself if you are truly not gambling or just trying to justify your actions.

I know people who place bet on soccer matches because the $10 bet is worth it since it makes 90 minutes of watching the soccer match even more exciting. So he is paying the $10 for the excitement. He doesn't care if he wins or loses. I ever ask why bother to bet and he say if he did not bet, the excitement is not so great cos win or lose, he has no stake in it.

When you buy shares, you own a portion of real company assets ( physical machinery, inventory , technical know how …) etc

when you buy crypto, it is backed by nothing , only imagination .

get down from your high horse
i own 100 AAPL shares. can i go in to the store and say i take a iPhone because I got shares and thus own a portion?

the shares you buy dont even give you a seat at AGM or voting rights

dont make me laugh that you buy stocks on platform and say is not gambling and own a piece of the company. you buy cos you want to speculate and win money. not invest
you go in with $1 million and sit on a board of an SME and grow it, then i say it is investing

I can argue stocks is gambling also

investing and trading also kind of gambling
Not really. But like I always say, it depends

If you buy stocks hoping it will go up in the long run or pay dividends, it's not gambling. If you tikam buying this stock and hope it goes up and you sell immediately, that's gambling.

So it really depends on why you buy the stocks.

It's the same even in education. If you pursue in education for the sake of knowledge and hopefully get a career, you are investing in your education when you spend on it. If you are studying something with 0 interest but because the govt says this is the rage in the future, you are gambling cos you have 0 interest and if after graduation this industry is gone, you have nothing but an irrelevant piece of paper.

Totally wrong.

You may have misjudged "value" but end of day you received a share.

government puts casino, lottery and sports betting as gambling.
you put in money, you can either lose or win money

stocks and crypto is the same. i put in money and can either lose or earn money. not considered as gambling. what a joke

Stocks, you pay to get something. Not really gambling.

Now, if you want to go to a very strict definition of gambling, then all life is a gamble

You pay for a bus ride. Maybe the bus will crash and you die inside. You are taking a gamble whenever you take the bus.

Cross the road. Same thing.

Put money in the bank. Bank can go bust. Govt can go bust so sdic end up useless

Get a child or spouse for companionship. Can be char siew or end up divorce.

My point is, buying stocks is not gambling cos you are getting something for your money though it depends on your purpose. The exact same action can be either gambling or investing depending on why you do it. If you strictly define anything that requires an element of chance as gambling, then all life is a gamble.

it is basically similar to mystery box right?
using real money to gamble a "virtual item"
in this case ... a "token" or coin ...

anything you play and won is called 'investment', you lost is called 'gambling', period.

Last time got people argue in EDMW claim crypto is what secure, decentralised etc.

But it is not backed by gold or there is no economic activity to fuel the rise in value..

Ended up.. what happened?

Not really. Last time I did suggest to my company. Turn it the other way round.

Decorate the box. So that when you pay money, you are buying the BOX and whatever is inside is just a bonus, rather than you are buying whatever is inside the box and you have no idea what it is. Just decorate the box and you can describe it as you are buying the box. So it's no longer gambling.
