Suzhou deserves more than a day trip especially if you are a senior. Lots of gardens and their cityscape at night is nice too. There are also many water towns around, Tongli is probably the closest and easiest to access. Good for a day trip or spend a night if you just want to relax.

Maybe just visit one garden, as the gardens are all quite similar?

I visited all 3 cities last year in 14 full days. However, I had an additional stop, i.e. Nanjing.

Anyway what I did was to fly into Hangzhou and depart from Shanghai. Reason I choose this route is because I felt Shanghai had the most shopping potential so better for me to end at Shanghai to avoid carrying additional stuff in the HSR. I prefer multi city flight to avoid having to take the extra HSR ride.

I also did Suzhou as a day trip from Shanghai because I didn't want to keep changing hotels. Only managed to visit a garden, the silk museum and visit the canal area. While I barely scratched the surface of Suzhou, tbh we wouldn't have gone to another garden even if we had time because the weather was too hot (mid June).

Hangzhou was my favourite city of the lot. Somehow it had a more relaxing vibe and the attractions were fairly easy to reach.

I used only HSR for all inter city transit.

Which airlines? Good experience?

Different airlines..
Xiamen Air SG to HZ.. SQ for Shanghai to SG..
Xiamen Air rather basic. No IFE but does serve meals. Does the job for me.

Usual SQ service for return journey.

Personal choice, I rather do multi city because it's not just time wasted on the extra HSR journey but you also need to factor in travel time between hotel to train station / station to hotel /waiting time etc.. basically can say easily 5-6 hours wasted..

Agree, I much prefer multi-city but it always about the cost vs a return tix. I'm also looking at xiamen air to HZ but using China Eastern from SH back because got more flight time options thannSQ I think and slightly cheaper but I haven't really looked at the details. Still preliminary planning, gathering info.

Hi All, I'll be visiting HZ, SZ and SH at the end of the year. I will most likely use HZ and SH as my bases for the trip. Could anyone recommend which areas are convenient to stay in, as well as any hotels that you would suggest? Thanks in advance!

You can stay along Metro Line 2 if you are going to rely a lot on the service because it links Hongqiao which has the fast trains linked to Hangzhou and Suzhou. It also has stops for Nanjing Road, People's Square and Lujiazui (Pudong). For Hangzhou, try to stay at Shangcheng district between the West Lake and Hangzhou Railway Station where your train from Hongqiao should arrive.

Well I just came back from shanghai and hangzhou.

Hotel in shanghai , you can stay in Jing’an District . Choose hotel that based on your interest , didi in china is super cheap. but check your hotel walking distance to nearest metro if you prefer taking metro.

I stay in a hotel on line 8 North zixiang road. 2 stop away from qufu road (joy city mall, basically a acg mall)

One stop away from my hotel, Hongkou Football stadium also have Hongkou Plaza (mainly go sushiro, standard there is way too good , better than sg, good shashmi and sushi)

It is also a few stop from East Nanjing road and Yu garden.

If your legs can walk. Stop at yu garden in the evening, admire the lights , slowly walk over to the bund, then walk over to east nanjing road.

Regarding Train to Suzhou and Hangzhou. don't bother with Hongqiao. There is shanghai main train station (lots of train to suzhou , but a few train to hangzhoudong too. Much nearer and easier to didi there.

Suzhou I did not stay any hotel, just a day trip.

Now hangzhou , I stayed at Hangzhou Qiyue West Lake Culture Hotel , 5 min walk to west lake. all the shopping mall (in77) and Gonglian CC (pokemon gym + anime stuff lol). this hotel have a nice rooftop garden but weird room with steps. Just find a hotel over there and you will be golden.

went to nanjing, yangzhou, hangzhou and shanghai and never took the train / metro once. All commute by car. Chose EV MPV for most didi rides and more premium ones like Zeekr 009 and Li Auto Mega for trips from Nanjing to Hangzhou and Hangzhou to Shanghai respectively.
In Nanjing, i stayed in Ritz Carlton, felt it was very good, breakfast selection and quality was good too. Hangzhou stayed at Four seasons west lake, most expensive hotel of all during my china trip but was quite underwhelming. Their restaurant Jin Sha was good though. My kids loved it even though they are not that keen on Chinese food.
Stayed at W Hotel in Shanghai, felt so so and breakfast was not impressive as well. Should have stuck with Ritz Carlton. Wanted to try Sheng Yong Xing for the Peking duck but not available. Asked for a later date but was also rejected. Could tell that they looked down on me. So no choice went to try Da Dong in IFC for the peking duck and their squirrel fish which we felt was good as well.
Overall feel Shanghai traffic very jammed and in fact most of the locals (the ones that i work with) dont drive there. They just take the metro/didi
Also good to register your meituan/dianping in singapore as i cant seem to register over there in China.

planning a trip to SH in Nov 26, 2A2C. thinking of taking the cheapest SQ to SH but will reach SH at 10+PM. given that timing, is it feasible to still take the HSR to HZ? my plan is having 3D at HZ then the rest at SH with a day-trip to SZ. Wanted include NJ to let the kiddos see the massacre site but wifey says too out of the way (i suspect she wants more shopping days :p )

anyone ordered online on TB, PDD and send to hotel in SH? How fast do they deliver locally? are the hotels willing to safekeep your parcels even before you check-in?

Btw, SQ to HZ is operated by Scoot, or u do a transit at HK if want a full SQ.

I did not check the actual HSR timings but HSR do not have midnight timings unless for long distance sleeper (D class)..

Actually NJ is not that far off using HSR but it all depends on total trip days. IMO NJ attractions are kinda meh but the city has a mor tranquil vibe as compared to the other cities you mentioned. Maybe it's because less tourists (both local and overseas) visit NJ..

Only ordered from TB.. no problem to send in advance but I usually inform the hotel beforehand.. most hotels are swarmed with parcels from TB... By the way, don't miss the natural history museum in SH if your kids like dinosaurs/animals...
