People,

I just got onto the 200M fibre for singtel.

For local servers on speedtest.net I can hit 200M. But for US servers in LA I can only hit like 5-10M. Is that normal?

I can't seem to run the speedtest on singtel website

Utilities | Technical Support

It just keep loading... I have reinstalled Java.... what speeds are we supposed to get for LA servers on Speedtest.net?

50M? 100M? 200M? 500M? Welcome to the real world. International speed on Singtel is really crap. They guarantee you a certain minimum speed, so far to me its all BS.

Blame it on International infrastructure. Like Singapore is the only country in the world with high speed broadband capability. No one else is ready for it.

Actually all over the world (Except Worn torn country like Arab Middle East, North Africa, problematic country like Iran and North Korea and perhaps some of the developing nations South America, China), including South Africa, Israel, Malaysia, USA, New Zealand are preparing for NGNBN initative.

But the target complete time? Around 2020s.

Even in some of the non-mainstream ISP, the speedtest result to USA (LA) server is no more than 50Mbps.

This has something to do with peering, despite some US ISP offers 1Gbps residential speed like we do.

And yes, all ISP has to pay for IP transit such that it is not possible to pay up to maximize the speed. (Extortion rate BTW)

err.. I am just wondering if my 10M download speed for Speedtest.net LA servers is normal for a 200M plan.

I am not expecting 200M for downloads to US sites but 10M seems way too slow.

I am on a wired connection and as I have said, I can hit 200M on local speedtest.

If I am getting 10M, there is no way I will be paying for my fibre plan...

Well for any ISP, you may say get 10M or 30M on a single application like Speedtest.

To fully utilize 200Mbps? Download A, B and C together lor. A device might stream Youtube drama, B watch movie and C is torrenting (Ok lah, Stinktel cap your torrent lagi worse than M1) etc.

Comparing to how Singtel cap the International speed to 15Mbps for a 100Mbps plan last time, the difference is if you use multiple device at the same time, you get only 15Mbps last time in total (So if all few devices are upgrading your phone's OS or installing Windows / Office Service Pack, the speed is slower than 3Mbps ADSL) and now it is 200Mbps if download large files from the same example.

Actually I prefer Singtel to cap the bandwidth for everyone.

At least then maybe they can maintain a certain level of speed for everyone.

I think they can't support full speed for everyone so might as well throttle it and so that the standard is more consistent.

I don't mind throttling to 25M for 200M if that means I can hit 25M all the time.

Then you might as well just pay for 25Mbps speed instead?

If they offer 200Mbps, it should deliver somewhere close to it?

I don't mind if Singtel only charge me 25 mbps instead of 200 mbps.

Are you sure this is the real speed on Singtel utilities? Singtel or any company of course will make a software to show you that its selling product or in this case, is more than good. I have used many local test and they all indicated about the same speed which is also very much less than half of what Singtel utilities said. If run in other times, Singtel results 70-100% fluctuations.

So I advise do not believe your telco's own website to do speed testing or benchmarks. Use other website that are unrelated to your telcos.
