Vesak day is actually not a"chinese" holiday. Its indians.

Ever race is designated 2 days.

Chinese - cny 2 days
Malay - hari raya puasa/haji.
Indians - vesak/deepavali.
Angmoh/euraisans - good friday/christmas.

The remaining 3 are new year, labourday and national day
Like that is really snooking the Indians leh.

Holidays are based on religion, not race. Cannot assume just because of a person being a certain race - he belong to a certain religion.

Does all indians practise thaipusam? I don't know enough about their religion to comment . But if they have lower/higher caste and each group practise religion differently, then I dunno liao
I suggest that we give 2 day holiday for thaipusam and remove deepavali

Don't ask for too much lah.

Some people ask why Tamil is a second language here when Hindi is the most common language in India.

First, let Thaipusam be a public holiday. This isa good thing.

Secondly, let Indian Nationals take up seats in the cabinet and let Singapore have a PM who is from India. Not Singaporean Indian, but an Indian National. This will set a good example that we are well integrated.

I disagree that selection of public holiday should be based off religion for 2 reasons.

We have way too many different religions.

The current "system" of 2 days per ethnic group and 3 more to be enjoyed by all is very fair.

If any more ethnic holidays should be added, each ethnic group should be given equal number of days. However since this will mean a big jump, it's probably better to add single day holidays that is not ethnic dependent like the 3 more mentioned earlier.

If the Indian community here feels that they don't want Vesak day and Deepavali, they can and should suggest what they want but still keep to the 2 days allowed for their ethnic group.
