I googled this, it takes 60 to 90 days for a potato to be ready for harvest. I think it takes too long and the land price is too ex to turn a profit. No economy of scale if the land is not large enough and you cannot buy it cheaply with cheap farm equipment. Maybe in a flower pot but then it takes 2 to 3 months before you can enjoy the potato. Ginseng probably but wrong climate.

Hydroponic sweet potatoes can be done IIRC.
Rooted in expanded clay medium and misted with nutrient solution.

The key problem in hydroponic planting of root vegetables is that it results in a lot of waste. Long story short, the foliage is unwanted. Contrast with leafy veggies where the foliage is the crop.

not sure if our climate is ok for it
Potatoes will grow almost anywhere. The yield here will be pretty sh!tty though. There has been research done into GM potatoes that better tolerate heat.

In our climate better stick to sweet potato and yam. Sweet potato leaves are a good food crop and are an alternative to harvesting the root.

for sweet potatoes, once you harvest the leaves, there won't be any sweet potatoes to harvest. if you want the root, you cannot harvest the leaves.

That's right. You want the roots, you gotta wait for the leaves to wilt. And wilted leaves need disposal. You'll be able to harvest the leaves relatively constantly as leaf harvesting doesn't kill the plant. You'll want to do it often in any case as old sweet potato leaf is inedible.

Btw, sweet potato leaf is different form potato leaf for those not in the know. Sweet potato leaf is delicious. Potato leaf will kill you if you eat enough.

Once my pond is up and running I'll give hydroponic sweet potato leaf, watercress and kang kong a go.

Consumer's expectation for potatoes are not as high as veggies. Potatoes dont have to be freshly delivered and they last much longer. So it makes more sense to import them.
