Hey all, my mum will be going to China for a week next week and I plan to help her install an VPN app for her phone.

Any VPN apps that is recommended to use? I installed Tunnelbear but looking through some reviews of it, seems that it may or may not work in China well depending on location.

Actually you can get the China SIM cards from most major airports. Cos they need your passport to activate the SIM card.

Just returned from Guangzhou. Got one from the airport upon clearing immigration. China Unicom. 3gb for 180 yuan. Can use in the whole of China to make calls. I use it for Baidu navigation and booking train / hotel tickets on Ctrip. With voice calls can call up the hotel directly with having difficulty locating it. Lasted me for 15 days.

No need to cancel card upon departure cos it is only valid for 1 month.

If you book via trip.sg, you can make booking using your singapore phone number. All confirmations will be sent to your email account.

Ctrip is their Chinese local version that requires you to have a China number. Be careful when booking hotels using this version as some Chinese hotels do not accept foreigners.

What is the name of the prepaid card?

For my trip last week I went to a small airport (Quanzhou Jinjiang International Airport) and I did not see any counter selling mobile phone card. Maybe there will be counters in Xiamen.

I need a long term card so I got one with the help from my relative. 移动王卡 China Mobile King Card RMB18 per month minimal but selling at RMB9 per month for two years.

You can book your China SIM card online then collect it at the airport, theres a blue booth at each terminal... think its called Changi Recommends.

Anw i used to always used SIM card when i travel too. but more recently tried using the Wifi router cause able to share with friends and cheaper too.

Also when you go to China rmb to get the ones with VPN for whatsapp facebook etc...

I'm using the 10day ICC sim card 3gb/unlimited data + 100mins&sms for $20. The reception is pretty spotty in Nanjing and Suzhou. After 3gb, data speed is only useful for whatsapp and text based browsing.

Google for Esender 易博通 the number can be used for SMS or if you want a physical card or esim. Can be registered for WeChat too. Different rates for different plans.
