Are you not visiting Milford Sound when at Te Anau? It's probably the highlight in that area. You can chose to stay at the lodge at Milford itself instead of Te Anau if you want to do more walks along the Milford Road.

Do go to Nuggets Point Lighthouse when staying at Kaka Point. I hear the sunset there is very nice but I only visited in the daytime which is very nice also.

For things like skydive, I suggest you check out various places that have that like Fox, Franz, Wanaka, etc. Just do the first one you come to when the weather is good. Often activities like this and glacier hike are cancelled due to weather so strike while the iron is hot.

Besides milford sound, check out doubtful sound if you have the chance. I myself haven't been there, but I've heard it's less crowded and equally as beautiful.

Will be heading off to new zealand from 22 Feb - 14 March. Arriving and departing from Auckland, but I plan to spend most of the time on the South Isle, whats the fast way to travel from auckland to wellington?

Planning to rent a car but I see most rental company jack up the price if you want to drive on both north and south, so I plan to rent only when I reach the south island, can save money on transporting the car to the south too.

For those wanting to go Doubtful Sound, bare in mind it's a full day event. You start around 9am, travel by coach to Lake Manapouri, catch the ferry across, go through a mountain pass by coach before finally getting to the jetty to board the boat that takes you out to the sound. Should return after 4pm.

Doubtful is larger in scale and more serene because there are less tourist boats and planes plying that area. Milford is more compressed, and therefore, more spectacular in terms of sheer slopes and waterfalls IMO. It can be done in less time as well. If you only have one day, Milford is enough.

That's a good idea, you're referring to the northern explorer right?

i think so. there's only one passenger train travelling btw AKL/WLG.. prices might be expensive unless you book early.

You can consider from Te Anau to Dunedin instead of Lake Wanaka. If can squeeze in, detour to Kaka Point/Nugget Lighthouse on the way to Dunedin.
It's a sizable city and if you get there early, you can spend an afternoon exploring the Otago Peninsula, which feels quite wild and remote if you are willing to drive around.
