Sri Lankan Rupee (LKR)

Hi Folks,

Quick check on anyone whom have been to Sri Lanka, did you change for the LKR in SG?
Given that the currency is close one, you'll get terrible rates in SG apparently.

Besides, you are technically only allow to bring in up to 20k LKR.

So is it more advisable to bring local currency into the country and exchange it at the airport upon arrival?

SGD is widely accepted at the money changers, preference for USD dollars.

If you are into casinos, the big ones in Colombo offers the best rates in town.

Is Colombo a nice place to visit? How long would I need to see it? :-)

I think a weekend or Long should suffice to be able to get a feel for the place ... next time you could go longer then

I brought in USD and changed at the airport (rates at bank branch at airport are essentially same rate as banks in town), but SGD should work fine too. Keep the receipt, you’ll need it to exchange any left over rupees before you leave.

I changed it at their airport when I landed and changed back before I left. Beautiful place and nice people.

Nah, if I were short on time I would skip Colombo and head straight for the sights, e.g. Kandy and/or Cultural Triangle, or the beaches Galle, Unawatuna or Bentota if you prefer. If travelling by buses, you can take direct express/highway buses to Kandy and the southern coastal towns and bypass Colombo.
