How do you find the selling price in China ? Could advise ? I tried this, not sure if should be the way.

I google "小米 红米 8" and went to www.mi.com
then I click "立即购买".
It says"3GB+32GB 799元 4GB+64GB 899元".

So this 899 RMB is the official selling list price ? Is that the price people in China would have to pay ? Or less ? Converting SGD, it's S$173.59 (higher than the India pricing mentioned before)

Hope it's not too troublesome to explain to me.

Thanks very very much in advance.

Yes that is the official list price.
3GB/32GB RMB799
4GB/64GB RMB899

On the other hand, now it is close to 11.11 so there will be discount now and more discount on that day.

For example, now 3GB/32GB version is at RMB749 from some shops.

Then India is selling lower than China ? $160 vs $173 ?

I do not know the India price but that is perfectly fine. It is just their pricing strategy. And India is much poorer than China.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_GDP_(nominal)_per_capita?wprov=sfla1

India versus China on the GDP per capita data: based on IMF 2018 data.
China: US$9608, No 67
India: US$2036, No 141

For reference, Malaysia is at No 63, US$10942

Ok. Thanks very much... thanks a lot. I'm trying to make sense of what I read here and that's very helpful. Appreciate your replies.

Indian Xiaomi phones support lesser network bands thus is cheaper, as lesser royalty is needed to pay to the necessary royalty owners of the network bands.

it's still the same phone, right ? How does that work ? Xiaomi sells the hw to the user. They need to liases with the telco ? eg I buy a phone in Singapore and use in India, how the royalties work ?

Yes it's the same phone, but the manufacturer can choose to decide what network bands to enable for the device.

They do not need to liaise with local telcos, the royalties are paid to the respective owners of the network bands such as Qualcomm.

BTW, if you are going to buy Redmi 8 phone in China, you may want to buy Redmi Note 8 4GB/64GB at RMB999 instead.

Redmi Note 8
4GB/64GB RMB999
6GB/64GB RMB1199
6GB/128GB RMB1399

On the other hand, the higher tier of Redmi Note 8 in China is not that competitive now. Take note Xiaomi is losing market share in China now that Oppo(Realme belongs to Oppo), Vivo, Honor (belongs to Huawei) have come out a lot of value phones. And Apple/Huawei still have the brand power in China on the high end. So Xiaomi can not compete in the high end but also lose on the low end.

Realme vs Redmi on the low end. You can say Realme is very good value.

1) Redmi 8 (Snapdragon 439l)vs Realme 5 (global, Snapdragon 665)

2) Redmi Note 8 (SD665) vs Realme 5 Pro (global, SD712) and Realme Q (China model, SD712)

Redmi Note 8 China listed price
4GB/64GB RMB999
6GB/64GB RMB1199
6GB/128GB RMB1399

Realme Q China set launch price. Official list price now may be RMB100 higher but real price can be lower for the two higher tier version.
4GB/64GB RMB998
6GB/64GB RMB1198
8GB/128GB RMB1498

3) Redmi Note 8 Pro (P90T) vs Realme XT (Global SD712) and X2 (global, SD730G) and Realme X2 (China, SD730G)

Redmi 8 Pro China listed price
6GB/64GB RMB1299
6GB/128GB RMB1499
8GB/128GB RMB1799

Realme X2 China launch price
6GB/64GB RMB1499
8GB/128GB RMB1799

4) Of course CPU is just one factor, Xiaomi MIUI is apparently more recognized than Color OS and may have longer update cycle and better support from the community. So if you need to use the low end phone for longer time say three years then probably Redmi can be a good choice.

5) You may not want to buy Oppo/Realme China version since you may not have good support to install GMS or Global ROM (Realme Q may not even have Global ROM). On the other hand there are many people buying China set of Redmi and Xiaomi and flash the Global ROM.

@xiaofan .... did you explore the reasons for your Mi Max 1's bloated battery?
I would consider it a critical failure. Must revisit your charging pattern bro.
I have both the Realme C1 & Realme 3, and I must admit that for a China made product, I'm amazed by the build quality of both these models. No wonder they come with two years local warranty support. A sign of confidence in their work yo.

Mi Max 1 bloat battery is a common issue. You can go to the Mi Max thread to read out the issue.

In fact it has the lowest life span of all my smart phones (my first Android phone was Motorola Atrix 2 in 2012, then Samsung Galaxy S3 LTE and S4 LTE+ after that ). All our phones at home (Apple x4, Oppo x2, Vivo x1) bought from 2015-2017 are still working fine except Mi Max 1 which I bought in early 2017.

My iPad 2 bought in 2011 got the bloated battery issue in 2018, but that is after 6 years of active use and 1 year of light use. My iPad Mini 1 bought in 2013 is still working.

Actually can order online and replace yourself. Search YouTube for the replacement instruction video. Or ask someone on Carousell to change it for you.

The Redmi 4X phone I'm using also bloated recently. All the while, no problem. One day, I was watching a video over the lan and as battery low, I also charge it. Then I realise the phone HOT ! By that time, the battery was already bloated. So I think mine is heat.

Other than bloated and the screen partly separated from the case, the phone looks alright. So I'm wondering whether I should continue to use or get a Redmi 8 or Redmi Note 8 Pro.

Yes I know but I do not want to go that route. Safety first. And new phones are cheap enough.

Safety first. Just go and buy the Redmi Note 8. I would not buy the Redmi Note 8 Pro because of the MTK processor. And Redmi 8 is kind of not really much better than Redmi 4X.

Redmi Note 8 should still be better than Realme 5 and Vivo U10 if we compare based on the same SD665 CPU. So if you get good price then it is much a better buy than Redmi 8.

Redmi Note 8 $240+ with 1 year
Redmi 8 $195 with 1 year
Realme 3 $169 with 2 years, 3+32GB, Helio P60 on 12nm. P60 is not bad at all. No longer a laggard. It's fast enough, energy efficient & cool as well.
And comes with many more 4G LTE bands is a big plus for frequent travellers.
